While sparring in the arena today it came to my attention that once in a stance like bloody that the stamina drain happens at the same rate as if the character was in the melee swinging. It is my feeling that the stamina drain should be linked to the actual swings of a weapon. In that way in PvP, for example, one could pace one's self a bit and pull back to catch one's wind. Perhaps have the stamana drain in both the actual swings as well as just being tense in a stance; yet the larger of the two drains should be the attempted strike itself.

It would also be a better simulation if there is a learn by doing for stamina.

The way combat is right now, you are constantly attacking. Stamina would still deplete at the same rate.

It would be more useful if the player had more control of combat. Choosing when to initiate attacks, choosing when to block, choosing the ferocity. All of those are linked right now.

Right now, PvP combat is very unnatural. If you've been in a duel, you know what I mean.

Yes my suggestion is that the stance itself could drain yet only minimally. Each strike, on the other hand, could drain as much as is happening at present.

Yes, however such combat changes would be likely slow coming. My suggestion could be a fairly quick fix.

the combat system was redone two years ago, a gsoc project, we lack someone willing (and skillful enough) to merge the project.

For the time being, you can set up hot keys for changing stance.

Just set up shortcuts and map conveniently placed keys to them.

Ie.
F1  might be attack bloody
F2 might be stop
F3 might be defensive or whatever

As Rigwyn stated, there are numerous ways to get around the flaws in the combat system. Still, I doubt the development team has enough people to fix this at the moment. If you have an applicable skillset, join.
