Choosing a character without choosing people?
« on: January 19, 2017, 10:30:19 pm »
Now that I've been around for a while, I started thinking... my character will certainly have difficulties interacting with some of the people around. Either because there's no IC reasons to interact at all, or because my character just doesn't seem to click with then... making it really hard to try play ICly yet keep interacting with them more than "looks away awkwardly"

I feel this is a pity since the player base seems quite small, and I'd like to see more of everyone's RP  ;) But is there a way to build character so that I do not need to choose between people like this? Many alts?

Personally, I would say either make a more extroverted character or else give your introverted/quirky character a reason, job or duty that forces them to interact with others. That conflict between wanting to avoid others and needing to engage with others could add some interesting chemistry or unpredictability.

Good luck.

And use "/me" and "/my" to describe things your character does while not talking, so that others know that you as player are indeed interacting, just rather subtly.

The emotes are quite helpful, also.

Thanks for the hints everyone! I especially liked Rigwyn's idea  :)

Regards emoji, I'm probably going to need a cheat sheet, since I only remember the basic ones like greet and wave, but always forget the others. Does anyone know if there's a way to make custom emojis? Like, during the market, it would be very useful to me to /rummage instead of always "Please give me a moment to find the goods *rummages through the selves*". Then again, hotkeys are an option, too, but take longer to memorize.

When in game type /emote and it will give you a list of all the emotes you can use. You can use these while something or someone is targeted for a slightly different response or with nothing selected.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I know how to use the emotes, they truly are quite handy! What I was trying to ask was, is it currently possible to make my own emotes? E.g. instead of writing "/me desperately searches the forums for help" I could write /forum with the same result. Which is how I understood the emotes work.

I know there used to be a way to edit one of the configuration files so that you could add user defined macros that say whatever you want. I don't know if this is still possible or not. If I wanted to see if it was possible, I would try something like this:

1. Define a macro for /say ing a single line of text using the game's interface. ( I forgot how to do this, sorry )
2. Stop the game and check your configuration files for this newly added text.
3. back up the config file and experiment with editing it directly.

If you say the same thing a lot you could just make a short cut.

Or are you talking about editing the filters file? so how it says things like if you have filters enabled and you type 'meh" it auto changes it do "I'm feeling a tad disinterested"? I'm not entirely sure how that's done...Okay with some searching I found some old posts that might help explain it to you better than I can.

I think that's what you're talking about trying to do. Hopefully that helps some!

That first link is the one I was thinking of, actually.

<replace bad="line0001" good="[All actions on the stage are just acted. The blood used is only artificial, being produced by squeezing red fluid out of pouches. Wounds and deaths are just played, and it can be observed by the audience, that it is faked. Please stay IC and keep conversations low in order to not disrupt the flow.]" />

Thanks for tips everyone! There sure are many ways to accomplish what I want. Big props to devs for making all this stuff \\o//

I ended up using both hotkeys and filters. Made a couple of filters for longer dialogues I know I'll be needing in RP later. For lines I'm going to say a lot in the future I made shortcuts. Here I got carried away... and realized I can't possibly remember even half of them. So I draw a picture of my keyboard, which I taped on the wall. It shows what I made each of the keys to do ;D
