Those old posts
« on: February 21, 2002, 07:47:34 am »
Man, reading those old posts (about 5 pages ago) is really time intensive, but some really cool stuff was being discussed.  Its kinda like archaeology.   Not that the posts are fossilized by any means. :)  I\'d highly recommend working your way through them, especially for anyone joining the boards.  I know that its more fun to just start posting, but some really really neat stuff is kicking around back there.  If you Dev people want to clean this message out after a bit, I\'ll understand.  Just didn\'t seem to fit in another thread, so I couldn\'t think of someplace else to stick it.

Below is some really boring crap about me thinking about making a game.  If you aren\'t bored, don\'t read it.  Unless you have a good attention span.  Or something.

In other news, I\'ll soon be working on my very own Pen and Paper RPG with my friend of some13 years David.  I hope to have it mostly constructed and tested by the end of summer.  I can tell you it involves getting permission from a venerable game company before we can publish it (a friend of his, who made a game system known as Phoenix Dawn, had his published in a small way.  I doubt you can find it outside of Maine though.  I think the sites down for it.  So anyway, we want to do the same.  David\'s already participated in the design of several systems, and I\'ve tinkered with the DnD system to try to turn it into a skills bases system aka horizons.  Didn\'t work, btw.  To much information to record.  I think the armor really killed it though.  We had a value for how much damage armor could stop from hitting you, how much of the damage absorbed by the suit (what doesn\'t hit you) was negated by the suit (hardness if you will) and how much damage the suit could take.  To complex.  That and having every weapon a skill.  Including magic too.  That was a pain.  Anywhoo)  Anyway, I am really excited about this cause we had some really cool ideas and its kinda fun to make your own system.  I think we can make it in only a few dozen pages.  It may come to not, but I doubt it.  We\'re both pretty passionate about gaming :)     btw, I already pointed him here, but I don\'t think he\'s signed up here yet.  He wanted to wait a bit for a demo to come out.  Plus he is stuck using a 28.8 for connection, whereas I have cable!!!!!

I hope you will make a great system with lots of details but not roll a fistfull of dices and then count in three years system, if you want too see a system that has failed due to details, look at neotech, there we have a failure, anyway if you need help with rules I be glad to help, I have finished one and is currently working on two systems.

Hey, thanks!  When we get down to the mechanics end, I just might give you a buzz, or whatever its called on the net.  Anyway, one thing I really hate is lots and lots of dice rolls.  I would like to see it a little more free form.  I am not sure what dice we will use (d20, d10, etc) but we will be going for a system with a reasonable dice roll; not like the standard white wolf game.  Not that I have anything against them, its just a little encumbering.  I can tell you that players who don\'t roleplay won\'t really be able to advance.  Anyhow, when it really gets going, I\'ll let y\'all know.  Gotta get to spring break.  Anyway, later

Heh, this is kind of interesting since in grade 10, 3 years ago for me, my teacher had us do activities based on our books as a bookreport of sorts, my book was the Dragonlance book \"Dragons of Autumn Twilight\", so as my project I made my own pen and paper RPG, the sourcebook for which was 28 pages (single spaced) ... which of course was a quantity unheard of in grade 10, and I recieved perfect on it, victory by sheer volume maybe, but I thought it was a cool system.

I write gaming systems that are distributed for free. They are what you call, \"beer and pretzel\" gaming. It seems like a lot of gaming systems are to bogged down by excessive amounts of rules that they cease to be fun after a while, because most of your time is spent doing calculations. A lot of people share my opinion, and so I make games that are simple and fun to play, with very general rules and a lot of options for gameplay. Most of the rules for these games I write are only a couple of pages long, as things like weapons and skills can just be made up off the top of your head (if ok\'d by GM). You must have a fair GM with his head not lodged in his rectum to be able to play though. :D

I totally agree.  Can anyone say, GURPS?   hehe, David got together with some people and made a system called BURPS - Better Universal Role Playing System
I miss some of my old characters.  When I first started roleplaying, I had a hard time thinking of names (still do sometimes) so I tended to recall names from books and stories.  My first character was Gurney Halleck, a bard and fighter.   Dunno if any of you recognize the reference, but it was kinda odd for Gurney to be a werebear too......  :O   College is such a pain.  It gets in the way of gaming.  Well, tonight I plan to try out Warcraft III. I\'ll let you all know about it.  No, I am not a beta tester.  hehe, gotta love morpheus.     I suppose I should feel bad     But I don\'t really  :P

My favorite rolepleying system I wrote was my. Which stands for Comedy Based Roleplaying System. The funnier you descibed what you were going to do, the more likely it was to succeed. Although this was subjective, it made for a good time. It required a GM with a good sense of humor, though. :D If anyone is interested in any of these gaming systems, PM me.

Its much more free that a standard game.  Anything can happen, that you want to happen.  Usually, there are many more skills etc. in the game.  But most importantly, you place with your friends, and there ARE no griefers, cause you usually play with around 4-6 people and a ST (story teller).  If you have a decent imagination, you will usually end up \'seeing\' what the ST describes (at least I do) and have memories of it.  Its humorous, its epic.  It dynamic.  Usually, you are on a quest that lasts a very long time (weeks, or months) and is tailored to your group in some way.  The world is custom made for that particular game (again, running months possibly).   Its fun.   Try it.  Note: DnD is BAD with 12 people unless you have an Iron DM.  I like to call such a group a \'mob\'.

I have a really good system that is pretty realistic and just uses one dice, a d20, whenever a weapon is used there is a chance that someone dies, really good if you don\'t want minmaxers in your game, and personally I think the white wolf systems are pretty fast, I mean there are worse things out there.

We can start a little role-playing through mirc or something, get some players and some gamemasters togheter and start up some real fun things.
This could be even better if we try to make a planeshift realm, fixes togheter a fast system (scavenging it from some other books, whip up a magic system and then throw up a test game with experienced player and a good GM, then we let it go beta and check what the people thinks about it).

That could be cool.  Do we restrict ourselves to what we \'think\' will be in the game, or just make it the way we want? (whatever that may be, I dunno)

Restriction and roleplaying does not go hand in hand, I would say that we think how the final game will be and then limit it to our imagination of the grand planeshift world, I suggest we start mailing each other about how the game rules and world will be made out, personally I want the dice system from Kult and the magicks from white-wolfs Mage: The ascension that seem too be a good solution, but we need to make the drawbacks on magic a little freehand.
Anyway let us mail eachother...

Shall we do this, and how will we coordinate all things we do?
