*Server-Side Software* <

I was thinking, since this game is free it would seem like a good idea to give out the Server-Side software too, that way there will be alot more servers to choose from and takes the weight off the guys making this thing. Ofcorse there will be ALOT of hacks and half of the servers will most likely be edited and hacked so its all just crazy mayhem (which can actuly be fun), but there will be ppl out there who make good stable servers that go by the rules. I cant actuly find a good disadvantage to doing this. Also the server-side software will most likely get stolen sooner or later since this game wont be able to afford high-tech security. (If u think this cant happen well EQ and Ragnarok have both had their server-side software stolen).

Could everyone plz post ure (constructive) comments/criticizem over this idea, thx.

Because it will be one big mess. U can\'t really have 1000\'s of svrs. Noobs wont know which to go to. People will probably start charging other people to go on their svr, as they\'ll have hacks and stuff which mke people uber as soon as they spawn. I see a mass of svrs with people in a giant killing spree.

maybe not 1000\'s of servers (like less than 50) but i see ure point, u wont have to worry bout noobs since they wont know about these extra servers (u might have a forum/site dedicated to ppl wanting to post their server IP\'s). Ofcorse there\'ll be hacks, im suprised this game aint completely dead from hacks actuly, this game is pretty much open sorce. You could have a moderated forum for legit servers and a forum for illegit servers.

Atm there simply aren\'t enough players, therefor no need for extra servers.. later though, it will be needed, and the dev team have shown appreciation for all the people wanting to host a server..

Just a simple comment: the server software is already public. This is an opensource project, so simply download the source code and have fun with it.
Planeshift will have a list of official servers: those will be the \'clean\' ones, with the official game contents running on them; of course we cannot prevent anyone to run its own unofficial server or anyone to play on it. Why should we?

I thought the graphical content is under Planeshift License that prevent it to be used with unofficial servers... Am I wrong or has the situation changed?

i don\'t think the server side software contains any graphics, it\'s just a bunch of scripts making the game run.

All the code is open source but the data and the graphisms are published under PS License:

3. You may use the provided Material, for personal use only, to connect to an Official PlaneShift Server only in conjunction with a Planeshift Client, distributed by the Planeshift Team. Offical PlaneShift Servers can only be designated by PlaneShift Team.

So a client using graphisms can\'t connect to an unofficial server.

Note: Of course there are reasons behind that and i fully agree with them

if you compile everything it should but i doubt you will have any use for it though.
it won\'t reduce the lag or maybe it will but it would be unnoticable.

and to create a server you can use by yourself for your guild sounds great but everything you do is only on your server not on another server
like you find yourself a diamond but wait i only have it here so what\'s the use.....
