PS on Linux
« on: October 30, 2003, 06:23:12 pm »
Hy. I\'ve dl-ed the PS linux package(*.tar.gz). Please tell me how to continue, \'cause I don\'t know if the \"PS HowTo\" and another thread are up-to-date. Even if they are, I dunno what to do next. ???

Oh and I\'m a newbie to linux, I know just some basic stuff and commands. I\'m using Slack 9.1 if anyone cares.

Linux is a great system!

For beginners, Slackware is not so good after what i heard. I suggest more Mandrake or RedHat.

The best howto, up-to-date, complete and working is acraig\'s one:

If you still want a \'getting started\' help:
1/ install devellopement packages (gcc, make, cvs ...). I can\'t help you more on this point since i don\'t know the Slackware packaging system.
2/ do exactly what it is written in the howto
3/ enjoy PS (or wait two months to enjoy it a bit more)

OH YES!
I know slack isn\'t the perfect choice for a n00b, but i think it will be good for me. I\'ll learn more...

About the FAQ. That\'s why I was asking, I didn\'t notice any mention of the linux package, but it tries to download some of PS files. Isn\'t there a way to skip this doubling of tasks?

tnx anyway

I think (but i\'m not sure) that the file you have already downloaded are the same that ones in the cvs. If i\'m right, to avoid redownloading of PS, follow acraig\'s guide (don\'t use the script) and when you are at build planeshift section, skip it and untar your .tar.gz package instead. (\'tar xzf planeshift.tar.gz\' or \'man tar\' for the doc)

That\'s better! Thanks a lot.

The distribution is red hot new, so I hope I\'ll have the right libs. I\'ve just managed to fight myself out of the text console:) (those pesty usb mice, grrr)! So, my net doesn\'t work yet...

On windows I can\'t initialize DirectDraw(2d thing!) on my radeon9600pro!!! The only PS thing I saw was a part of the char gen. Then the comp cools down so much, it freezes! :) :(
So linux is my only way out before CB. I hope that it will work.

Question: for what is the linux package(compiled binaries) meant? In the faq and the how-to, you have to dl stuff separately. Why does this package exist then, what is it for?

The PS binary is dynamically linked to CS and cel so if you download the binary release, you still need to download cs and cel.
