Help Request
« on: January 10, 2004, 06:43:39 am »
Ok, Im just new round, and Im under a 56k dial-up, so, before downloading those 90 megs, Id like to be sure of some things:
1. Does the source distros rely on some dependencies (I know CS so far), if so, which ones?
2. I saw the latest news (today\'s) and It says the upcoming version will feature a new model format or whatever, so I guess many changes will be done. Now, I just saw in some other thread that you had an option to update the game, is that a \"always working\" option, i.e I wont have to download another 100 megs in 1 month??. And, does the updates end up in some directory i can backup later, i.e, If i reinstall my OS (which probably Ill be doing this weekend),can I just use the previously downloaded updates with no need to re download again, like when people disgustingly update windows from inside?
3. Is there any chance to create my own servers, to play with some pal in a LAN or some? or do I need some special stuff to make those -I suposse- dedicated servers?
4. If you know, what are the fileformats used by the game (characters, animation, maps)

Thx in advance

2.  Since the next release will be such a major release, it may not be possible to just update the current client.  While it hasn\'t been decided for sure yet (as far as I know) it is possible that we will all have to redownload for the new version, and it will be larger, so it could be in excess of 100 MB.
The updates replace files that are out of date, so no, there is no seperate directory specifically for the update.

3. As far as I know, there is no way to do this.  More importantly, there is no reason to, as the whole purpose of a MMORPG is to play with lots of people :D  Besides, there is only one server atm, and it is easily handling the traffic on it.

4. Majority of the graphics are in .png format.

2. You will, for sure, have to download the new version from scratch. The reason for this is that the Crystal Space engine version that the next distro uses is a newer version, and that is what makes up the bulk of the game\'s size. Therefore, if you\'re gonna have to download almost all the files again, it\'s far easier to do it from scratch rather than an update. Also, CB is estimated to be twice the size of the current version MB.

3. You can do this if you download the CVS versions of client and server for MB (Molecular Blue) from the Sourceforge website.

4. PNGs are used for some art files but many are in TGA format. XML is used for many configuratory files such as keybinding and skin placement (is this called anchoring or something different?)

Hehe, sorry, but I\'m another person who can\'t answer 1. :P
