fair fighting
« on: March 21, 2004, 10:42:10 am »
i think that to make the game fair so people dont just close the game window as there about to die, and i dont know if this is possible or not, even if the window is closed they stay there until the fight is finished.

You have to be careful about how this is done though.  I know I never like it if I die because my conn is dropped (I use AOL, because I\'m not the one paying for it; needless to say I get kicked off a lot).  But I do agree something must be done to prevent people from intentionally logging out as they\'re about to die.

maybe have it so that they cant logout during a fight and ten seconds after it?

you cant see it with your eyes, hold it with your hand, like the wind it covers all land, this thing called love.
It can lift you up never put you down, take your world and turn it all around.

evan if you cann\'t log off during a fight, the problem still remains when your connection breaks down. Your conn dropped, char remained ig, the monster you were fighting at that moment killed you...

cann\'t imagen of an good solution for that... if you can logg off at every time players can \"run away\" when they are going to die,... when they have to stay ig during the fight is finished those players with bad conns won\'t be very happy.

On the whole I guess it is better to vanish from game at the moment you log off, if your opponent runs away, his own problem - let those anxious little creepers flee - don\'t fight him again... he will fast be bored if nobody wants to fight him anymore

he will also be alive if no one fights him.
 a possible upside?

lol ... he will also be alive if you kill him... ^^ its a game, he would always come back

but it isn\'t a disadvange for players with a bad conn... and really, it does hurt more to say someone has withdrawn from a battel becours he was about to loose, instat of saying he really loose a fight... has something to do with honor and so on

Nanaki, your theory is flawed.  The kind of person that would perform such a cowardly act doesn\'t care about honor and likely lacks even a grasp of the concept of such.  Penalization should be made, but the true trick is to find a way of doing it without simultaneously harming the unlucky few that get disconned.

well... okay, guess you are right about that honor thing ;) wouldn\'t work only with that

But is it really that bad if your opponent flees? I mean, you have no disadvantages out of it, ...okay,it becomes anoying after a while, but killing a char wich doesn\'t counter your attacks isnt a satisfacion aswell

On the other side, my conn is quite good, so I don\'t know how often those die who have a bad one. You hear often that someone died becourse his conn has broken down... perhaps just an overstatment, don\'t know...

can we get some statments from users with bad conns?

They have a name for this... the Linkdeath monster.  I have DSL now, but in the past I have used AOL and MSN.  With the dial up connection the linkdeath monster has killed me more than all other monsters and players combined.  Since PS is not suposed to be a PvP game there is no reason that loosing the connection should not remove you from the game immediatly.  It just does not make any sense to have your character in the game and controled by the computer.  I have never seen the computer do a good job of controlling link dead players.  Yes it is a very unfulling to have your oponent disconnect instead of dying, but you still have braging rights.  Linkdeath is real, and DSL is not avialable everywhere.   Punnishing the players that will use it as an escape strat at the expense of the honest players that can not help the quality of their connection.

i doubt that appkilling(yes, new terminology) is going to affect others gameplay since the current plans are going to limit PvP anyways.  besides, wouldn\'t it just be easier to /yield than to alt+f4, reload and re-login?

It seems like servers can detect Linkdeath, because in EQ when someone went LD they would stand there with a LD tag next to their name. To leave EQ and not go LD, you can to sit and camp, which took about 30 seconds. So just do that, and people who restart their computer, well make it so that if you go LD you start back in town or something so it wastes your time to walk back.

Well the solution to that that I\'ve seen in other MMORPGs is that when you are fighting you have to wait without moving (yeah move and you\'ll have to wait it all again) to log off usually 10 seconds.

The ten second rule really isn\'t a great idea i think. i mean there has to be a better way to solve this than that. I wish they would do the pk system like AC the pk system was awsome. With a pk mode there weren\'t many problems and not many complained about it. Well i just hope the devs think of something good
