Not the usual newbie question
« on: April 17, 2004, 03:57:17 pm »
I\'m a newbie to this forum but not gaming. And especially not to RPGs.I have played Planescape:Torment for over 300-400 hours and I am a great fan.So when I was looking in the gamespot beta center page and found this game,I couldn\'t help but notice the striking resemblance it\'s setting bears to the planescape universe. The building architecture and even the old-style,dark textures remind me of Planescape. In particular the city of Yliakum is just like Sigil in Planescape:Torment.
And yet there is no mention of the fact that PlaneShift seems to draw from the Planescape universe...not by the devs on their official site,in any case.Personally I would like to encourage the devs to draw even more from Planescape Torment...since that game was a real jewel...as a *true* RPG.

The question is:Why are the devs and all the fans a bit silent about this PlaneScape-PlaneShift resemblance?

Hiya Yian, welcome to PlaneShift. :)

I\'ve heard good things about Planescape, but I\'ve never been able to get my hands on a copy, so I can\'t say anything about the similarities. All I can say is, that the developers are working hard to create a very original, innovative world, using the talents of some brilliant artists and modellers to populate Yliakum with strange and wonderful creatures and places.

In the future, I\'m hoping all this will really become apparent. At the moment we just have a basic shell of what the game could be. It will probably start to drift away from it\'s similarities with Planescape, however. :)

Greetings,Mogura.
I suspected that part of the reason why everybody was silent about this amazing \'coincidence\',if you wish to call it so,is because not that many people have actually played Planescape:Torment. For all those who didn\'t,here is what the people who played it said:
http://www.gamertalk.biz/viewtopic.php?t=1190
Just to quote something notable from that thread:
?Of course, the dialogue isn\'t of the intricate depth and quality of Planescape: Torment?
-Pseudo Nim,Reviewer on FF8(http://www.game-over.net/review/feb2000/ff8/)
Put simply,Planescape:Torment is the king of RPGs...it is a masterpiece, and so we fans of the Planescape were amazed when we noticed PlaneShift(I alerted the community as soon as I found out).Although we are in doubt whether a masterpiece such as Planescape:Torment can possibly emerge,I personally would like to see the exotic designs of the Planescape in a MMORPG-and much more importantly the masterfully woven storyline and dialogues.Moving away from Planescape influnce would be in my opinion a bad thing-Planescape was a strike of lightning which broke the mould in the RPG world,so since PlaneShift seems to have taken up quite some Planescape style,it would be a pity to discard the chance to revive this winning formula.

Indeed, I can see where you\'re coming from here, but isn\'t it much better to make this bolt of lightning a different colour than the last (so to speak)? :) If PlaneShift were to try to follow in the footsteps of an old classic it would have alot to live up to, and true fans of the Planescape game would almost certainly be hugely disappointed. PlaneShift is not coded by a large company of professionals; they are volunteers, and very few.

By focusing on creating something new and original, you\'re free to open and explore more doors in terms of design, plot, quests, etc. Besides, there\'s a little thing called Copyright Law to beware of... :)

well i got planescape when it first came out and i have played it over and over myself (also a big fan ) but i don\'t see the simularities...to me sigil is a dark dirty rundown place. i think the only thing that would compare to planescape is the hydlaa temple ?
if man didn't take chance's the moon would still be made of cheese  8)

If im correct Planeshift is OLDER than Planescape.
/me takes a look in the rpgdot.com game database...
Yes! Its avaible since 12/10/1999
Planeshift was started in 1992... or something like that.
So Planescape stole this from Planeshift :P
A new day, a new failure!

Well,that\'s quite interesting.Whatever the case,I love the Planescape style and architecture.By talking about similarities I don\'t mean identities...I mean that both games follow the same exotic design.It\'s hard to explain it\'s characteristics, since I usually call it Torment-style :)
I just hope the devs carry on with this direction in design.
