Bind to Marker as respawn location upon dying
« on: June 16, 2004, 11:16:43 pm »
Title: Bind to landmark object as respawn location upon dying

Brief summary: Basically acts a sort of portkey to enable players to respawn in a particular city

1) Right clicking on any permanent item located in the town which the player intends to bind to will enable them to choose the option \'bind to shrine/rock/marker, etc\'.

2) It acts as a portkey so when a player dies, he/she will respawn next to the bindable landmark object which they are bound to.

Benefits of the idea:

Since based on what I have read, there will eventually be quests in the game, this will prevent the players from having to travel all the way back to the quest location from the default respawn point.

Heh, that\'s cool. It\'s somewhat like savegames if you bind to the candleholder next to the door you\'re about to enter. If you die, you\'re right back again. However, you would not want to be _too_ close, since you\'ll have minimal health when respawning IIRC.

Sounds like everquest, but I think PS will handle death differently.

Quoted from the Official Planeshift FAQ.
I died and lost all my stuff, can I have it back?
After dying your char will travel in the Death Realm, and if you can get out of there you will have your items and money back.

When you die you will have to get out of the Deathrealm. You won\'t just respawn in the regular world.

Well, but once you leave the death world, you need to pop-up somewhere in the WOTL. Still, from what I read in other posts, it seems like you would come out of the deathworld at places in the WOTL that are in some way connected to it, so it indeed seems to be incompatible with the marker idea, unless you could do a one-time teleport there. But as teleport isn\'t much liked by the devs, one\'ll most likely have to wander.

Hm, what if you bind to something and that object gets destroyed?  Are you cast into the Eternal Void of Night or something cool like that?

No, really, there should be a risk to anything that brings benefit.. I suppose the possibility of staggering out of the Death Realm into the middle of a giant insect feast might be a significant risk.  My concern is that being able to set where you emerge from the Death Realm might lead to taking advantage of death, which is something that I don\'t think should happen except for the most powerful of creepy necromancer types.

I\'ve also been led to believe (not sure how) that there will be many \"exits\" from the Death Realm - the easy exits will get you into tough places, and the hard exits will get you into nice places, or something to that effect.  That way you have a choice as to how much effort you want to expend in the Death Realm to get to where you want to be (instead of always reappearing in newb city or something like that)

No, I\'m suggesting binding to a permanent (Landmark) object which doesn\'t/can\'t get destroyed. For example a shrine in the middle of the town which the player was last in, in which case it would have been \"Bind to shrine\". Then if the player dies, said player will respawn next to the shrine.

he means that when you die you go to the land of the dead. When you manage to get out (hopefully you succeed (6) ghe ghe ghe) You are brought next to the last respawn place you activated. There wont be many, just 5-6 or so, 1 in north, 1 south, 1 west etc, and 1 in the middle of the land.
You will still need to go over huge distances, but it is easier to get to a plain somewhere in the north where you friends are fighting when respawning in northern city, then when respawning in the southern 1.

These stones/marks/whatever will have to be activated by you, and the last 1 you activate is the place where you respawn. That way you do not have to travel 10 minutes again to that same city when you die. They cannot be destroyed, but are mostly helpfull when doing fights or so in teams, so you can rejoin them much faster. Or when doing a quest, that you can start over again right away, and not have to walk/fly/etc. that distance again.
