Is this Vid. Card worth my $$?
« on: July 09, 2004, 07:26:09 pm »
Ok, so, to give you a better idia of why im so excited about this, here are the basic specs of my comp:

P4, 2.4GHz
512 RAM
52 speed CD drive.

As you see my comp is not the \"greatest\" thing out today, but it is still a prety impresive piece of work (i got it over a year ago). Now for the thing that im... uh... not so proud of, my Video Card. The video card that im curently using is the amasingly slow Radeon 7500!

So, for the past couple of weeks i have been looking for a good, and yet afordable card. First i was amazed by the new Radeon X800, which is said to be the best on the market. The problem, it cost $400! So i went to see what good old Nvidia has in stock, and their best card turned out to be the GForce6800. Although Nvidias card was a tad slower than Radeons card it cost only $300 (25% less). But that was still way to expencive for me.

After some time of searching i decided to get eather the Radeon9200 or the GForce5200. They seemed very good, and very afordable at first (both are aroud $130), but after i did some research, i found out that these are probably the worst cards you could buy. Next i saw the Radeon9800 seriese. The problem with these was that Radeon9800XT was way to expencive, Radeon9800pro was sold no where (or so i thought), and Radeon9800SE was as it turned out even worse than Radeon9200.

With no good video card found, i went to the Steam (www.steampowered.com) forums for help. And a miricle happen. I was given a link to this card: MSI ATI RX9800PRO

This card seemed awsome, but so did the previous ones, and they turned out to be crap. So i did some extencive research, and the more i find out about it, the more i love it. And at only $209, this seems like the deal of a life time!

So i ask you, people of Plane Shift, should i get this new card?

MORE INFO ON THE CARD

What you need to do is find a computer shop that is entrepeiner(Spelled wrong: means made their own buisness in case you don\'t know from how bad I spelt it :) ) Anyways go there and they should be able to test them on your harddrive, like put each in and test the difference. Thats what  I have done for almost everything on my computer including games but maybe thats just because I am good friends with the guy who owns this place. It would almost be better to get their opinion then non-proffesionals.

If I where looking for PC componenets I\'d browse around http://www.tigerdirect.com (come to think of it I am looking for componenets and I am browsing them lol). They have a very good selection for pretty good prices (I just bought a 7200 RPM 200 gig Western Digital hard drive for $89.99).

Err, newegg is a respectable site. I\'ve ordered several things from them and have received them in a timely manner.

My computer has about the same specs as yours (Athlon XP 2700+ 2.15GHz, Radeon 9700 Pro), I got it last February. The 9700 pro is pretty good, but I got it when it was ~$300. Now the 9800 pro\'s are cheap, I would go for them. Two of my friends have them and they say it is fast.

The card should be good. I don\'t think there is a game on the market which won\'t run with almost max details with that video....

Uhm... You seem to be slightly overreacting. For instance, just connecting to IRC generates an \"Intrusion Warning\". This is due simply to the IRC server scanning for open proxies. Also, it gives warnings when Spybot S&D (The best spyware removal program, and free too!) tries to access a DNS server, for goodness sake! A lot of people are slightly over paranoid and Norton Internet Security plays off of that by generating a large blinking shiny warning when someone so much as \"ping\"s you. But running an Nmap scan from my linux box didn\'t do anything ;)

Back on (well, closer to) topic:

Newegg is very respectable! I bought all the parts from them and built a computer a few weeks ago, we also have purchased a harddrive and photo printer from theme and they arrived in a very timely manner. Even with the free shipping.

Good luck finding a both good and affordable gfx card... I was stuck in a similar dilemma while building my system... I wanted a graphics card that didn\'t suck, yet I had only $800 for building the computer, and a good percentage was spent on the processor. (*wubs* AMD64). I settled with an nvidia 5700 i think. I am too lazy to check at the moment ;)
Good Luck! (Wait, I said that once already :P)

You can get an intruder alert by going to Walmart.com.

If you are using Linux you might get better performance out of a NVidia card with the same specs. The ATI Linux dirver isn\'t very good(slower, causes a full system hang with DGA, has a texture glitch that puts blocks into your textures, using FSAA for too long will result in a polygon explosion), and the Linux ATI dirver(the open source one) doesn\'t support 3D.

The Radeon 9800Pro that I got is very nice under Windows, and it still runs OK under Linux(I can play Planeshift and Q3A well).

That card\'s page mentions that the capacitors shouldn\'t die in less than six months. That\'s usualy a bad sign.

I\'ve got that card and it seriously kicks ass. Can play any game totally smooth, and you\'ll notice a speed increase as well once you\'ve got it installed. Well worth the $ IMO.

Xordan, did you get the normal R9800pro or the MSI R9800pro?

I\'ll probably go with an nVidia in my next machine for the reason that I\'ll be using Linux just as much as I\'ll be using Windows.

I still wouldn\'t get it even if it is fast, because it sounds like he has had his last card for more than six months and doesn\'t get enough money to upgrade very often. It would stink if the capacitors went out on your video card. I don\'t know what it might do to the rest of your PC, but it will be unusable at least untill you replace the video card. If you are a Windows user you should keep in mind that the high end computers of today might not run the next Windows too quickly when you upgrade.
