Process Priority and Lag
« on: August 09, 2004, 12:22:24 am »
One thing I noticed about PS is it does not increase it\'s priority when it is in focus.

I noticed that EverQuest was set up that way and I now understand why. Several of my games do not do this and the lag in the game becomes unbearable. I have a piece of software that automatically controls the priority of the foreground window, and when run with planeshift the majority of the lag disappears.

Something you have to realize from a users point of view... while you and me may run fairly clean machines, many other users do not. They have all their neat little download tools, and weather updates, and media updates... stuff that WILL attempt to take processor time away from other software such as PS... unless PS\'s priority is higher effectively giving less time to other unessential processes.

Processes work in several levels for those who do not know...

0 Low Priority
8 Normal Priority
13 High Priority
15 Realtime

Few programs default to low priority, but things such as Virus Scanners, Popup Blockers etc belong here since they require little processor time but will ocasionally choose to be a hog.

Normal Priority is where most programs default to, when everything is crammed here it has equal rights to processor time.

High priority is where your fullscreen games should go, if you\'re not doing anything other than that game nothing else needs processor time.

Realtime priority is generally left to system processes that are REQUIRED to run your system. However games can be put here but don\'t expect to do ANYTHING else until that game is closed.

Hmm, this sounds more like a Crystal Space issue then something we can handle.  I will ask Jorrit about this idea though.

Hmm... Perhaps you simply should not run those things while playing PS?

The problem is that some ppl, mostly under the alias \"n00b\", doesn\'t even know how to disable firewall/antivir.

So, IMO this is a good idea

Perhaps (although I\'m not sure I like it when a game sets itself to high priority). This should not be done in CS though. It is a PS issue.

Just get an unix system and you can set priorities as much as you want, whenever you want. :D
this needs root privileges though, so it wouldn\'t be good to put it as the default run command(user change, need for the pass...)

I think the best thing to do is like with all costly processes - just tell everybody to shutdown everything else as jorrit said.

Blue, a n00b doesn\'t have a firewall/antivir. ;)

Actually yes they do, they have it because their more technically minded friends have told them they should ;) Also, it is those that will normally have the firewall, since all the non-n00bs have a hardware firewall built in to their ADSL router or their bsd-powered gateway machine ;)

So, you would definitely suggest disabling Norton Anti-Virus (the prog I have) and any other firewall programs running on a machine?  I\'m having problems running the game at 256 MB RAM, and I figured the anti-virus and firewall programs were interfering at certain points...
I know I definitely need to upgrade RAM to a minimum of 512 MB to run the game. Are there any other machine-specific processes that might interfere with PS?  Thanks.

Firewall programs don\'t cause slowdown. Anti-virus program can cause slow-downs due to the files they scan but not a firewall program.

In any case 256M is not enough memory to play PS smooth. I guess this will be a much bigger problem then any anti-virus program you might have.
