"Newbie" doesn't ring right.

I was just considering what words would be appropriate and allowed in the realm of PS, and besides foul language and l33t, one word really sticks out. \"Newbie\"
Would it not be better to call one a newcomer, youngling, novice, Novie, neophyte, tyro, or any number of words you could pull out of a thesaurus that don\'t sound like modern slang?

Yes your right use of the words newbie, newb, noob, and other similar words would be very out of character so why do we not all make the effort to avoid they\'er use.

I doubt anyone uses the word \'newbie\' while IC. It\'s more of a term that floats around the forums, and is not negative in any way.

Speaking of which I think this forums title should be changed.  Not only new people may have questions (I make threads here somtimes) and the title of the forum might demote people from asking questions about ps, which after all, is what this section is for.

everyones gotta start somewhere theres no shame in being a newbie especially when the real game still isnt out yet. whenever i goto a new game i expect to be called a newb and to ask \"newbish\" questions but thats how the greats of games r made because they asked those stupid questions and made a real name for themselves after they got the hang of it.

its just in terms of typing quickly, since were used to noob, newbie, n00b, and such others its like a second nature to us by now. But yes you are correct in the terms of role-playing or anything of the sort, newbie would not be well to use...

However, you can greatly reduce the risk of ever being called \"n00b\" by lurking in the places for a couple of weeks to get the hang of it before posting a single post. Actually, passively gathering knowledge should be the preferred way.

And yes, \"newbie\" is just a saying that you are new, whereas \"noob\" means that you are new and act stupid.

I agree that RP-wise the term \"newbie\" should be avoided, but the proposed ones have meanings that are specific to certain establishments. For example, \"neophyte\" AFAIK is for aspiring priests, quite more than just what \"newbie\" means. Also, \"youngling\" refers to age, which isn\'t appropriate for IC conversation (because some ppl. might start out RPing older chars. However, I don\'t know of the meanings of each proposed terms so there might be one that is free from \"parasitic\" meanings.

a couple of weeks? i usually catch the hang of games within the first hours i mean i dont mean master but the basics r definantly down. meh i guess everyone goes at thier own pace (not saying thats yours ) but most definantly if newbs in a game would open thier eyes and watch for an extra 30 seconds thier question is usually answered without a word being spoken. but of course there r always those times when its just to urgent and ya gotta say it right?

I dont see why newbie is bad at all. Its actually funny to be called a noob so i dont know how it could be offensive.(it humors me)

\"Newbie help\" is a great title for its purpose becuase when then see it they immediatly know what it means (unless they dont know what a noob is, but thats just sad   )

@ thezambOWNie: Well, \"a couple of weeks\" probably was a bit conservative, but it was meant to apply to forums mostly, and in case one would not spend very much time each day reading through things. If one spends more time, this obviously decreases, but better be safe than sorry, right?

@ Myrtl: you\'re such a n00b! This thread is aimed at the ingame environment, not at the forums. We are trying to find a term to call newbies that has the right feel for the setting.

Maybe \"foreigner\" would be a good idea, as a newbie obviously would always be foreign, though technically their chars would not be, as they might have lived there for years... \"stranger\" doesn\'t fit it, either... \"nobody\" has a negative meaning, though it technically would fit perfectly... *sigh* how about \"noby\"?

P.S. Myrtl I thought you had played RS. There the word noob and similar words are used as an insult with a very negative context. Generaly amied at people you don\'t like for some reason the same way words like ******* and ***** would be.
