I\'ve been looking atthe game for a long time but have never really downloaded it because it seemed TO GOOD TO BE TRUE.

Well I have just decided it\'s time to give it ago, I gave the forum a search and found that everywhere everyone had posted it is fully free forever good news.

But what i\'m concerned about (pleased don\'t take this the wrong way) that maybe the game contains some viruses, or spyware or my worse enemy the dialler. I\'m sorry if you find this question offensive it just because PS seems, like I have said before : TO GOOD TO BE TRUE.

If it will make you feel any better, PlaneShift\'s code is Open Source, which means if you have the knowadge, you are able to create the binaries by yourself.
Not many normal users have this option since they lack software/knowledge to do it.

Jordan to tell you the truth I\'ve had the same fear of the game. You cant trust anything free espeacially online but....when you really think about it thats why this game takes so long...its all volunteer the devs aren\'t getting paid. And when 3.0 comes out you\'d better believe I\'m gonna send a plague on my phone line for however long it takes on a 28800bps to download this beast.

The spyware / virus / dialer issue is exactly why I don\'t trust anything that is not OpenSource for anything that might use the internet, because having the source is the only way of knowing what the program is going to do. Even without reading it by oneself, there will be several people who do, and therefore you can be pretty sure that anything evil will be discovered within days of it\'s appearance, and broadly announced. Of course, there still is the option of hiding things in the binaries, but this also is not very dangerous, because there will also be many people who build the binaries themselves and verify the outcome to the binary distribution.
Therefore this is a(nother) good reason why FOSS is superior. :tup:
