About RPing in PS
« on: December 18, 2004, 10:50:48 pm »
Q:What is RPing?
A:RPing stands for Role Playing. This means you will always act and talk as your character. So DON\'T talk about your new pc or new scooter in the real life, but talk about a new sword you just bought or something.
---

But here comes the point,
in alot of games you see people talking with words as \"noob, or n00b\". Personaly I realy hate it when people say this. I mean please respect new players and people with a smaller brain than others, and don\'t call them noobs when they did something wrong or said something stupids.

In my opinion \"l33t\" talking and words as noob should not be tolerated in the game. I mean when I play a RP i hate it to see \'modern\' idiottalk like this. Ofcourse you can say that from alot of words and maybe even the English language, but thats just different.

Who does agree with me?

I do !

The chat filter should (and I think this is already implemented/qued up for implementation) automatically delete (ie not show AT ALL) chat phrases containing words with numbers in them, words with punctuation (other than proper use of accents) in them, swear words, words like swear words, incredibly bad spelling, \"chat talk\" etc.

This prevents the blasphemous assault on our chat windows present in most other online games !

ME ME ME I DO I DO!

Everyone was a \"noob\" at one point, so you should help at least one person with the game when they start to return the favor of others helping you, you help someone so those others don\'t have to help them too.

Like the others i agree

If you -played Diablo 2 and the exp , youd hear the word NOOB and other raciest comments  + noob. This is totally disrespectful , i agree with having the word noob blocked out so no one could say.

I agree with you in some areas of course.... I believe you should keep the mindless drivel to a minimum, and clean up your language. It might even be a good idea to learn how to speak and spell... but I mean, completely eliminate OOC speaking? I think that is a little bit extreme, I mean, if I am really excited about something, then I am going to speak about it, to my online friends and anyone else who will listen. This is because many of us view the Online Community as sort of another form of life and communication... I mean, you have a new look, according to how you designed yourself, you have your own new family(guild), you are leading a different life according to your molding. So, in this different life, you\'re going to talk about everything that makes you feel good. I think it would be a bit... unfair to completely remove OOC chat on PS, seeing as these two existences conflict, but I agree that I would like to keep \"t3h 1337 n00bs\"  and other slanderous groups away, or at least reform them into civilized players.

If you\'re realy exited about something use the irc chat channel to tell :)

But otherwise there should be an OOC (Out Of Character) chat special for people like you. You\'ll be able to turn this on and off. When you talk you\'ll need to typ /ooc and than what you want to typ. I don\'t want OOC talk mixed between the RP talk.

I reckon wiping the entire chat will be the best way to go, as meaningless **************s fill up the chat box just as much as the original talk.  If a person who used a \"banned\" term (such as noob, newbie, n00b, pwrlvl, rbe etc) notices that their chat disappears they can simply type it again in real english - after all, the in game language is designated as engilsh on the project page, so people should speak it.

I agree l33t should not be tolerated. But I don\'t really like censoring. It doesn\'t work. Just look at runescape. You cant say anything. They censor every variation of every \"bad\" word there is. For example, the word \"gay\" is censored. Then people started using \"gey\" instead, so they censored that. Then people started using \"ghey\" and so they censored that too. Pretty soon, you cant have a decent conversation without having half your words censored because the devs censor every word that has any conotations to anything bad, no matter how subtle or mutilated the word is.

My point is, censoring doesn\'t work. People will always find a way to get around it, and although you and I may not like people using certain words, it\'s going to happen.

Jhour reith, p**ple willl alwaais uz otherrr worts ohr letthers so the sensor system wont see it.

And the worse thing is, after alot of time that they played the game, they are gonna use that words also out of the game!

You see it with words like noob, people are saying \"naab\" or worse things now   :(

I think we just need to triple post this so everybody knows this chat is not welcome :)

What?s the problem with etc???
What?s the problem with newbie??
Etc is real English and newbie is a new person willing to learn.

[ooc has its good uses when talking about things, possibly explaining some Tec difficulties, or explaining something about your character.]

I don?t think things like ppl, l8er, rofl, (etc)...  That are just condensed words should be banned.

I agree that the game should be mostly RPing but there needs to be an outlet for the of topic stuff.  Also filtering is not really a good idea.  Now the GMs should be able to ban, kick, slap someone who uses such words such as \'l33t\' to much or interups gameplay with repeated non-RP behavior that is not sent through the proper outlet.

Now for \'newb/n00b\' I do not feel needs to be part of the gaming experience and would much rather people call them something they would be called in real life, for example \'foreigner\' or somthing similar.

And for \'etc.\', it is not a word it is an abbreviation for et cetra.  Not that I have problems with abbrevations considering that the rate one can type is severely less than the rate one can talk, and thus should be allowed.

[Edit] Sorry for the etc. thing, ohh Great ZellGa\'dess, *Kwip winks*, I did not mean to seem like a grammer instructor, and I may be wrong in that it is not a word any more.  The extensive use of the abbreviation may have caused the writers of dictionarys to add it, after all they often have entered new slang words and such.  I also think I have heard another legend of your greatness and must tell it someday ;-) [/Edit]

Oops- I didn\'t mean to say censor \"etc.\", I don\'t really want everybody to try to spell \"etcetera\" :) :).  I was meaning \"and words like these\".

As for newbie, while it is used as a word today, it is still just a  computer term that plagues games (I just checked my dictionary).  Why not describe a new player as a beginner, and so avoid taking part in the overuse of \"newbie\".

Well I agree, newbie isnt a real Enlish word.
I\'ve never heared it before when I was the first time on a gaming form :P

Noob is a word to say that someone sucks, and that he\'s stupid, and should not be allowed. Just say he sucks and that he is stupid...

Maybe you\'re right about \"etc.\", but I still prefer whole words like et cerea. But since nobody uses et cetera anymore becuase its far to difficult to spell (:P), that one should be allowed.
