Mac version...
« on: December 24, 2004, 01:23:01 pm »
I was suffering from the misconception that a Mac and Linux version would be released at the same time as the Windows one. Ah well... I\'ll just go and weep in this corner over here. :\'-( I\'m sure that it\'s great though, and I\'ll probably download it for the benefit of my windows-using friends.

It will be our turn soon, hang in there! If I were to guess, they will relase clients as they are finished polishing them. I\'d expect the linux client to go up next, because it has the second largest userbase, probably followed by mac, which is a niche platform.

In the mean time, enjoy the fourms, hope in the irc, or just have some time for your families, because once it\'s out for mac, they won\'t be seeing much of you! :)

Oddly enough, Mac OS X has a bigger desktop userbase than linux, although I guess that if you are talking about PlaneShift, then you would be right. I think that this is only because there is no Mac OS X client, however. The demand for this sort of thing in the mac community is quite large, as we don\'t really have anything like PS except WoW, and you have to pay for that. Hope the mac client comes out soon! :D

well said thingy,
it\'s also a frequent misconception that M$ has the largest user base.

Ive dealt with alot of case studies on user groups (both through university and through my job), and in reality there are not as many windows users as there would seem.
We did some private research (for a uk pc manufacturer), last year (2003), and the long and short of it was that only 2/3 of the pc\'s which ship with windows stay on windows (in the uk), whereas machines that are sold with lindows or linux (or some variant os) either stay with that os or at least have it dual boot with somethin economical like win98.

I think one day in the not too distant future (particularly if \"DarWine\" is made general release soon enough), most people will switch to a free os like linux, or a more user friendly os like os x.
However, I spose for now it\'s quite nice being in a minority - certainly a talking point at partys (yes I am that boring).

Anyway getting back to the point, has anyone heard from Daniel Fryer? I think last time I spoke to him he said he was going on holiday soon - which worries me, cos I really need to play cb.

As for alternatives to Ps, the mac community have indeed very few choices - for a few months ive been beta for a game called vendetta online (think escape velocity, in 3d, and mmorpg).
but unfortunately theyve started charging to play since it went general release, and I cant really afford to pay to play.

There was a good link i picked up for mac mmorpgs
http://homepage.mac.com/skybug/mmorpg4mac/MMORPGs4MAC.html
but unfortunately its a little outta date.
Oberin looks like it might be interesting if they ever get it finished.

I too tested for vendetta online, and do in fact run two macs; a dual processor powermac G4 tower which has a Yellow Dog Linux partition, and an iBook G3 dual usb with an OS 9 partition. It also doesn\'t surprise me that not so many people stick with M$. I\'ve got a whopping 0 M$ apps on my G4 right now. Oh, and IE for mac sucks bigtime. Totally different beast from on a PC, and the words \"lumbering oaf\" apply themselves readily to Mac IE 5.5.

Edit: I also tested for WoW and I am currently testing a bunch of other stuff including http://www.wolfire.com/lugaru.html

Our main Mac Man just recently got married so I think he will be away for a little bit.  It was working from the last I heard so I imagine that the Mac version will be updated shortly in the new year.

Well if he\'s gotten married then that\'s great news and I offer my congratulations! Thanks for giving us mac users a time period - gives us something to look forward to. Wish it was sooner though... :P Ah well.

Ok, the last word before I disappeared was that once we got the client starting up correctly on a Mac, it worked, but I\'ve had issues getting all the pieces together and out the door in a working fashion.  It might take a bit more private testing of the updater etc., but we should be able to get something working a couple weeks into January.  Sorry for the delay, but I\'m really not here!

Thanks,
Daniel

You know he\'s hard-core when he just got married and it\'s Christmas but he still reads the forums.  :)

You can also try building cvs and then running the updater (then building again since it has an older client binary on update server).
