Okay guys great ideas. Ive had the same problem just today too but................After minutes of headbanging the desk I came up with a simple solution ( that worked for me) all I did was uninstall the game and intall it again at the website.  I think its because one of you files gets screwed up by the updates.  try it out.

Moving the mouse out of the PS window doesn\'t change anything in my case. Maybe Im going to d/l the new 0.3.005 version and try with that instead of updating the 0.3.004 one.

@ Black Kitsune: of course downgrading the client will work, since this bug crept up during yesterdays update, which means that it\'ll not be present if you don\'t update. ;)
I will move the current version to another folder, though, in case someone wants to run a diff, in case it actually is a file corruption problem instead of a code bug.

2. Run the updater ALWAYS before you play

3. if all else fails, get a gm to reset your Characters position, this worked for Vanderbal

1. already done off course... no consequences
2. I dont start the game with the play icon but with the updater.exe...
3. No no no. the crash happens when I respawn too !!!

When another map is loading : sometimes the load starts sometimes not... the most of the time it crashes  while the client is requesting the world but the bug once happens just when I click on the start button before the display of the loading page !

Moreover I saw sometimes the name of a player on the server (green font blue underligned) written in reverse font...

then crash

full screen : windows error message \"do you wanna send the error message to microsoft\"

windows mode : planeshift error message : \"the error was saved in a dump file dmp ...\"

I can give my dmp file if a dev asks for it (no need to make the forum growing)

@Seytra: I read something in another thread about opening a window in background:

http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=12684&boardid=33&styleid=3&sid=f0ca4db80b356bc26a1420b7163561cb

...that is may help to open a window in background... I just thought its a joke, BUT it works for me - now i can play again with fullscreen, but sound still not working.

I use exactly following sequence:

 - Reboot
 - Start \"Desktop\" drawer window... and leave in background
 - Start Planeshift -> it does NOT crash now ...

If I do not open the desktop drawer it crashes, if it once crashed and then I try to open desktop drawer -> it does not help any more, the trick only works directly after reboot.

UPDATE: this seems to work for plaza, but still sometimes during level transitions it crashes... so back to non-fullscreen and mouse-cursor-trick

Possible cause
« Reply #19 on: December 30, 2004, 10:05:09 pm »
I was experiencing the same issue, game would quit at the \"loading world\" screen.  I tried reinstalling the game only to get intermittent success.  (I even kept a backup copy of the whole freshly installed and updated game directory since I was convinced that a file was somehow getting corrupted after I ran the game once).  After copying my pristine files from my backup directory to the actual game directory several times and running the game to no avail I realized that something else must be the cause.

Then It  ocurred to me  to check my connection to the server.   With a:    ping -n 100 planeshift.fragnetics.com
I found out I was geting 11% packet loss!   after resetting my internet connection and waiting for the packet loss to go down to 4% (best I could get) I was having much better luck logging in.  I actually played the game for 2-3 hours with no problems (except for the ocassional pause - probably another lost packet)!

So I wonder if a great deal of this could be peoples connection to the server,  the game may be less tolerant of packetloss when logging in and zoning...

Oh and defragging the HDD, trimming down my startup items (including shutting off my AV before starting the game), and turning down the windows visual effects helped a ton as far as speed went.   Of course now my windows XP looks like 2000 but Planeshift runs great.  Hope this helps some folks.

@ ronxena: I just tried the desktop drawer suggestion, but it didn\'t do anything about the crash (I rebooted before trying). However, it did have another effect: PS managed to save a dump file for the first time! Before that, it would always tell it wasn\'t able to save the file.

@ Snyk: I just tried, but I didn\'t loose a single ping packet during the time of starting PS and it crashing.

Oddly, the client log, psclient.txt, lists sound initialisation problems as the last entries, despite me having disabled the sound in pssetup.

I\'m going to post these in the bug threads once I have uploaded the dumps.

I dont think that is the real problem for all startup-crashes, because if I install the original version of planeshift using the installer there is no problem. The problem occurs after updating the game with planeshift-updater for the files from 29.12. ...

And I have packet-loss 0% at (for the 100 ping tries)...

http://upl.silentwhisper.net/uplfolders/upload5/PlaneShift_Qiraash_Todelorm_Version_Dec_27_2004_Addr00C6EBB77.txt  (minus the last 7, coz it had a dubble file name :S)

And now I just got the same error when I wanted to Request the world
http://upl.silentwhisper.net/uplfolders/upload1/PlaneShift_Version_Dec_30_2004_Addr00409CAD.txt
I noticed a different filename, is it just me?

i`ve got the same problem as Adair !! But im not so lazy as him hehehe so here is that note after click YES :)

\"Saved dump file to \'E:PlaneShift Crystal Blue\\Planeshift_Version_Dec 27 2004_Addr00409CAS.dmp\' Please email this file to the planeshift developers, detaling how this happened. If you have concerns about privacy, see http://watson.microsoft.com/dw/1033/dcp.asp\"

That appears after click \'YES\'.  I can`t read that *.dmp file cuz my computer can`t read it :(

Any suggestions ?

I think the problem I describe before is a connection problem because when the server is just up and nobody is playing Ive no problem. So I think this because 2 person try to connect at the same time...

Here is a crash dump.  The game crashes when \"Requesting World\" is displayed. (Sound is set to software. game is windowed and set to 32bit 1024*768 and virtex buffer objects are turned off)

The game was updated on 12/30. I did not try the game before updating.
