There is a thread on that problem elsewhere, but since this is the Mac client thread I can mention that there was a tip to make updater work on Windows that basically mentioned \'take the contents from what was downloaded by the updater and put it in the PlaneShift\\ 3D folder and run the updater again.\'

I tried unzipping the contents of \'repos.zip, which is the only file modified by the updater and stick it \'Somewhere\' but that didn\'t work either.

Awaiting insightfull tips from authorities.

well!

i tried to play this morning and received the error, \"You are not running the same version as the server\" or something like that

I ran the updater through the terminal....it updated things for about 10 minutes or so....then it said \"update finished.\"

I ran PS through the terminal(since i lost the clicking ability it seems) and it started up just fine, but.....
I\'m still not running the same version as the server....oi.

I did notice some more music for the login screen, so the updater must have done something....or maybe its just a placebo....either way.

Updater crashes everything......
« Reply #124 on: January 21, 2005, 01:22:30 am »
I ran the updater client through the terminal command:

cd /Applications/PlaneShift\\ 3D/;./updater.app/Contents/MacOS/updater

And everything worked great and the update went well.  But then afterwards I can\'t open anything.  I click and it just tries to start but then does nothing.  I tried to run it throught the terminal but got the bus error again.  I redonwloaded plane shift and did the same thing but of course the same thing happened again.

Anyone know a way to fix this?

Here\'s a repost because I don\'t know how to link to other posts and am too tired to figure it out.  Hope it helps.

Well, this morning (8am Los Angeles time) the server was failing.

However, I\'m using this technique to update.  I figured it\'s best to have recent updates, so I keep two planeshift folders.  I happen to have the HD space.

Anyway, after you\'ve run the updater from the terminal, it will not run again from either the terminal or clicking.  Thus, I keep a sort of base directory where I keep the the raw downloaded image and another sort of working directory.  When I want to update, I move the updater from the base directory to the current planeshift folder, which I keep in /Applications/Planeshift\\ 3D.  Open the terminal, and type

cd /Applications/Planeshift\\ 3D/    (or wherever you have it.)

./updater.app/Contents/MacOS/updater

and the updater will launch correctly.  It will tell you that you are updating for the first time, but that\'s okay because presumably you are updating to the current version.

To run the game, \"launch Planeshift\" has never worked for me.  So from the terminal I type

./psclient.app/Contents/MacOS/psclient

and it launches.  Then I get the buttons on the top of the screen, but none of the channel buttons on the bottom of the communications window, so I get stuck in various channels.

The point is I get on the game and I can wile away the time I should be doing my research.  Thus,  I recommend we all stop playing! :)

Best of luck, I\'ll see you all on as Mulla Nasrudin

I think which ever way its looked at for the time being (hopefully not too much longer) the majority of us cannot join laanx due to the incorrect version issue.
Ive spoken to people online today who claim to be running on os x - yet I can only get into Ps on my Gf\'s pc - my ibook is having none of it.

Hope someone can sort a fix out soon - meanwhile I suppose its time I did some washing - been neglecting it for the past week or so (curses!).

Planeshift looks interesting... but the glitches are kind of bringing me down.
I\'ll wait until the next release, but for now... hello World of Warcraft.

Ok well i made a new copy of the folder and coppied everythign over one by one to find out what caused this.  The thing that stops it is the vfs.cfg.

I still get the message that the server version is different

The server has been updated, but the Macintosh version of the client has NOT YET BEEN UPDATED.  Sorry for the delay, but there is no fix until I publish a new version of the client AND make a working updater available to people who don\'t have one (i.e. one that was broken by the server changes)  At that time a new, complete package will also be made for people who are more able to re-download 250+ MB.

EDIT: if it is only a vfs.cfg problem that \"breaks\" the updater then that can be fixed pretty easily.  I\'ll try to find out what went on, but my priority is getting a working version of everything out the door.  This is problematic since right now some changes are being made in the client which cause assorted bugs.

Cold turkey has gotten me on the run.

And that\'s only after a coupple of days on PS ;) But honestly, I have been a MUD maintainer so I only want to say \'Keep up the good work\' and await the update, as and when it comes. What so many people don\'t realize is that this (maintaining) is a hobby, not a job, and that you do this for free, because you really are swell chaps. I see anoying little critters demanding a working client yesterday, naging about service, but if you haven\'t paid for it you have no claim to immediate service. For those anoyed by the \'poor quality of service\' I can only say \'Feel Free to Fix\'. The client code is in CVS, you can probably port it yourself if you have such cravings you go bananas for a few days of unavailability to an opensource game based on volunteers pitching in the job other games charge you 1 pint of blood every week.

Once again: Do your best - we macers managed without PS for so long, we can damned well wait longer if that means you (dfryer) don\'t get burned out (I did; I would not blame you).

When will the new server be ready for us Mac users again? Should I download the game again to reset all the updates?

Well the vfs.cfg stops everythign from working.  But after update the updater app also does not work regardless of the vfs.cfg.  I\'m sure this is just due to the fact that there is not an update for mac version yet though.

If you\'re really desparate and good with Terminal, it\'s possible to build PS from CVS on a Mac... just build cal3d, CS, CEL, and then PS. Run the updater and add \"System.RunWhenNotFocused = true\" right after \"System.Win32.DebugConsole = yes\" in psclient.cfg. psclient should work now. You\'ll need to run cslight (from the CS build directory) on most of the maps in art/world.

(If you have no idea what I just said: the Mac version is usuable if you\'re willing to mess around for several hours on the command line with a rather complex build process. However, if the above makes no sense you\'re probably not able to do it yourself; wait for the next release. dfryer\'s work is definatly visible.)

I\'ve done that and can log into the game and play as usual on my Mac, but it seems that data/options/ignore.xml and shortcutcommands.xml are getting corrupted every time I log off. If I don\'t delete them, PS crashes on next start... they\'re definatly not the XML they should be; rather garbled. Not sure if it\'s Mac-specific, a PS bug, or just a result of something gone wrong in my build setup.
