To dfyer:

If I don\'t have libcal3d.11.dylib in /usr/local/lib it crashes during the opening music. But if I don\'t have libpng12.0.dylib in /sw/lib it doesn\'t even get that far. Weird, since most people don\'t have to mess with libpng12.0.dylib at all.. right?

Oh and btw dfyer is it normal, that the game runs poorly on my iBook G4 1GHz, 640Mt, ATI Mobility Radeon 32 Mt, 10.3.7? I mean is the game EVER going to run well on this machine? Just that this is all in vain if this  machine is too light for this game..

Your RAM is also important (1 GB is good), and if it\'s not running very well, you may want to lower the resolution too. My only complaint thus far is that it won\'t run full screen. :( As for libpng, I got that through fink when I installed Crystal Space (for something unrelated to PS).

rather extreme solution....
« Reply #302 on: February 06, 2005, 04:51:50 pm »
I have thought (and I bet im not the first), of a rather extreme- but potentially realistic solution for mac users desparate to start playing.

>Install Gentoo Linux
>Install Ps Linux version
>Viola!

....of course there are bound to be problems with this idea - but I might give it a whirl once my external drive arrives next week (dont wanna go testing this out without a safe backup first!)

Any thoughts? - anyone tried this already?

Hmm, I got it running full screen by modifying the planeshift.cfg file (Video.FullScreen = true).. Doesn\'t that work for you?

Anyway, I tried it with 800x600 & 16 bit. It was still slow most of the time, really annoying to play. And what comes to getting more RAM, I believe 640Mb is the maximum for this iBook model...

Way way overkill. It works now, just copy the right libraries and you\'ll be up and running with a lot less work and hassle than installing linux would involve.

EDIT: Oh, and there\'s an update to my updater. :) I\'ve noticed that the updater downloads files that really don\'t need updating do to modifications made by the user (such as planshift.cfg, for instance). I\'ve added some code in so that it doesn\'t do this any more. If anyone knows of any other files that shouldn\'t be updated (besides planeshift.cfg), tell me and I\'ll add them to my \"list\" (ok, so there\'s only one thing on it now :P ). If you really want to download everything, run the updater from the Terminal with the argument \"updateall\". And yes, you can use all 3 commands together, i.e.:
java -jar Updater.jar nogui zipentries updateall
Note that the order of the commands does not matter. Happy updating! :)

OTHER EDIT:
fib4:
Here\'re the appropriate lines of my planeshift.cfg file:

; Use full-screen mode if available
Video.FullScreen = true

I\'m guessing full-screen mode is not available do to display settings/video card... (though I\'ve run CrystalSpace\'s walktest in full screen).
It can be addressed later, though. I\'m still celebrating the fact that we have a working release!!!

Still can\'t get on.  I take it everyone else can get on.  I haven\'t read otherwise.  I see the ping lag of 300ish when I get to the screen but I get the \"server not found\" message.

I\'ve bypassed the hardwired router.  I\'ve turned off every network service and firewall on the mac, still not getting on.

well one thing is for sure, this game wont run on an iMac 700mghz with
with 512 built in ram >_<.  Guess i gotta go install on my parents new tower and redo everything *sigh*, say could we possibly get a minimum requirments spec up? I know everyone seems to be running 1ghz+ iBooks or a new G5\'s, but am I the first one to try on an older iMac?

shifthappens: The latest vfs.cfg file is still wrong, unfortunately. You still have to copy from dfryer\'s link (I just copied the file and renamed it vfs2.cfg. Then after updating, I just copy it and rename it so I don\'t have to go find that link after every update. :) ).

EDIT:
For those still having problems getting it to work, I suggest this:

1. Download the latest full distro posted by dfryer on the main site.
2. Update via whatever method you can (if you use my updater, don\'t use zipentries, just to be safe)
3. Make sure the executable bit is set for the client.
4. Copy libcal3d.11.dylib from psclient.app/Contents/Resources/ to /usr/local/lib/
5. Update the vfs.cfg file from the link dfryer posted.
6. Double-click the client and play. :)

Thank you for this info, but it doesn\'t help much. Could someone PLEASE create a new topic with in depth info on how to get a working version?
1. Did that.
2. Update? Didn\'t I just update by downloading the most recent version? Why do I need to update again and how do I do it? If I use the updater that comes with it all i get is a zip file as a result. Does this mean it updated? Where do I find Cha0s\'s updater that I keep hearing everyone talk about?
3. Is this the chmod 755 thing?
4. Did that.
5. What link? Where is the link?
6. Wish I could do this.

1. Download the newest version of the game (http://www.planeshift.it/download.html)
2. Download Cha0s\'s updater (http://www.world-of-cha0s.hostrocket.com/PSUpdater/Updater.jar)
3. Put the \"Updater.jar\" in the PlaneShift game folder.
4. Open Terminal, go to Planeshift game folder, run command \"java -jar Updater.jar nogui\"
5. Change the contents of the file \"vfs.cfg\" (in Planeshift game folder) to the contents of this: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/planeshift/planeshift/vfs.cfg?rev=1.6&view=text
6. Copy the file \"libcal3d.11.dylib\" from client bundle \"psclient/Contents/Resources\" to \"/usr/local/lib\"

7. After that it still didn\'t work for me, so I had to copy the file \"libpng12.0.dylib\" from \"psclient/Contents/Resources\" to /sw/lib. (Actually, I had to create that dir \'cause It didn\'t exist)

If you can\'t follow these steps, then there\'s nothing you can do, just sit tight and wait for a real working version of the game!

As far as i am concerned, you are lucky. I havn\'t been able to even open the client. Even after all those steps. So i\'m gonna take Fib\'s advice and just sit tight and wait. But i\'ll keep reading the forums incase someone comes up with a breakthrough development.

Holy Laanx batman...

Well, I\'m a moron.

I was trying to connect to localhost all this time.  I\'m such a moron.

Helps if you select Laanx at the freaking login window.

Please reply now and tell me I\'m a complete moron, I\'ll feel better.  :)

I owe everthing to having read this thread and working diligently with computer.  Albeit, I\'ve been having an inner ear problem and have had my head turned at a 45 degree angle half the time, but other than that the pain in my head is starting to receed.

The game is not running very well on my iMac 1Ghz 768 RAM with GForce 4 64Mo too ... but it\'s playable.

For Mathious, I think that the version for Linux on the website is compiled for i386 (PC) and not for PPC (Mac). So you\'ll have to recompile the entire game under Linux, the same you can do on the mac ;)
Sorry for my poor english, I\'m french.
