Note Pad
« on: July 16, 2005, 11:17:11 pm »
Ok I did do a search for this but didn\'t find anything, if there is don\'t jump me for it and I can\'t find one in game.

But I don\'t know about you but I have a memory like a sieve and have a great deal of trouble remembering what people have said to me in passing, who I helped and helped me, where I saw a thing (very much on the road to oja) and such. I\'d love an in game note pad as I\'m rapidly being overwhelmed by a mountain of a4 paper with notes on it I can neither decipher (hurried writing) nor collate.

I know we have the buddy list but I don\'t want to add every person that I\'ve had a quick chat with to it but I would like to know if it is the one of many that I helped or helped me on seeing them again. Plus some info I need to keep an eye on, who was is in a guild but no longer in it, who was hogging a kill from me, who gave me an item so as I can repay them. Dates and times of events, war, peace, times people say they will be back on.

I can do it in Word but I hate having to switch and then come back again. My knowledge of programming is slight but I can\'t think this would be a monumental task.

Thanks to anyone that considers this or can tell me why it can\'t be implemented :)

Edit: Thanks Raveneye, Moogie and Pestilence I like to chronicle the events in my characters life for RP but taking the time out in-game to jot it down kill the mood. Plus I suffer the same thing in game as I do IRL, you know the thing where you walk into a room a forget why you are in it. Same in game, I run for a bit sit, for 5mins thinking \"What did I come here to do!!!\" lol.

The cut and paste thing got me too. I have a number of standard answers for things in RP and if I could put them in a list to paste in would save some time and my poor typing fingers. Things like, /me shakes ... to wake him, /me thumps the bar. I have taken to screenshots and copying stuff down at the end of gaming

Some may think this is a little too in depth but I think some of them are the people that would say there isn?t enough to do in-game. With good RP there is a world of things to do.

I like it, that would be a really neat feature to have in a game, it could kinda be like a jurnal thing. Thant\'s preatty cool, it\'s something i would use to. Because i hate trying to deciphere my own notes, I am a terrible writer. I love it.

Say if you make potions for a living, then you could write down your own special recipes for the health potions and such. That would be neat. Or you could write down your spells or something, that would be really realistic.

I like a writeable journal also, perhaps accessable somewhere in the Quests window. My memory is unfortunately just as bad. :(

hmmm can\'t count the number of times I wanted one of those :)

Only annoying thing is that you can\'t copy and paste things out of PS ;) Had to rewrite my description (seen it in the RP section? it\'s big enough to get annoyed alright ;) )

*scratches head*

Didn\'t there used to be something like this...? Must\'ve been my imagination. Yeah, it\'d definitely be good to have something like this.

Ba-da-BANG.

I really don\'t understand why people have an impossible time finding results using the Search tool. You are searching only within the Wishlist, right? That would narrow the results down immensly.
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Thank you for your ability to point out the failing of outhers it must stand you in good stead in social interaction. As I said I did look but with no joy!!!  I was warned about the hostile nature of the board. I did say I looked at least I attempted it, more than most. I?m sorry if my extensive use of it didn?t return the results you in your infinite wisdom managed to find with such ease. I do not find it ?IMPOSABLE? and have searched for many with sucsess.

Instead of taking delight in pointing the faults of others ?ba-da-BANG? try helping without patronising. It is nether wit nor jollity.

Do people just spend their whole time on here looking for things to poke holes in, criticise? ?OH Oh Oh Na-na you did something wrong... look look i got one? the post you point out is also out of date and I?ve seen people on here berated for resurrecting very old posts.

I know this isn?t the harshest by far. But just outlines the elitist and patronising nature of the forum.

I guess my future participation will be purely to look in as a guest and see if the server is down. If anyone can tell me how or remove my FORUM account, please do so as now I can?t even be bothered to search for a way to do it.

Have fun all.

It?s not just this, it is just one of the many examples that people on this forum can?t construct help without some infantile attempt at preschool irony. I wanted to participate more and whole heartedly but I see the thoughts and ideas of anyone without a post count over 300 aren?t considered worthy of a civil response.

I am neither offended by this alone or Karyuu but it?s the culmination of reading all the posts that contain stuff like this. I know if someone has posted ?HELP PLEZ NOOB CAN NO MINE FISH? then it may, just may be called for. But this was purely a dig and in no kind of jest.

And yes I?m aware I should have amended my earlier post and not posted a new one \"But frankly my dear I don?t give a damn\" :P

EDIT: I apologise and am sorry I came across as vociferous and somewhat OTT but I was caught before my first cap of tea and cigarette I will try not to react so badly next time if I?m back. I still stand by the fact that this didn?t need pointing out in such a way.

EDIT 2: I said I?m sorry for being so harsh and such an unkind rebuttal it is not something I do often and not like me at all. I spent a whole day reading the main page and looking at posts to see if I could find my questions before I even fired-up the game for the first time.

Then getting the same response that I see many get, and yes some very deservedly when they are asking a question that has over 100 posts about it, rubbed me the wrong way. I didn?t think of it as a notepad until I came to post this one so the search criteria I was using at the time didn?t give me the results.

I?m sorry I misunderstood your \"Ba-da-BANG\" noise meant to say that ?hey, I found something! Yay! My search was successful,? It came across as more ?YAY look I?m so damn good I can find anything in seconds, look at me shoot down another stupid noob, keep the for us 1337 only.? I won?t be leaving as you say this one event is a small thing but this wasn?t just about this. As I say I spent a great deal of time looking through the forum and some of the treatment of people isn?t really conduseve to getting good publisaty for the game. I?ve seen people made fun of for poor language skill, asking simple questions and much more. Berating them will not stop it the next noob will do it and the next and the next its part of life on a forum. You may have seen ?How do I mine? 1000 times but for every noob that posts it it?s the first time they have asked it. Yes people should read and search the forum but they don?t, that?s how it goes if you don?t want to replay to them ignore it and they will find the info another way but don?t mock them, jibes and jokes are fine with people you know will take it the right way but to someone new to the world of RP and forums it may be just be enough to put them off.

I feel we got off on the wrong foot and I am happy to bury the hatchet and call it a day, hope you can do the same and sorry again for the unkind reply.

Yeah, but... man :C

Myrddin, I seem to be misunderstood quite a bit lately. I should post warnings before each post ;) My little \"Ba-da-BANG\" was a \"noise\" meant to say that hey, I found something! Yay! My search was successful, and I am a happy little camper :3 Look at my glee. In all seriousness, it wasn\'t directed at you in the slightest. So let\'s calm down a bit and think this through.

Did I in any way use insulting language in my post? I think all I did was comment on the search method. If you had a ton of other \"negative\" posts before you exploded here, maybe this was a bad place to explode? I certainly didn\'t do anything to deserve that response, so why should it have been directed at my post?

Posters are berrated for resurrecting an old thread to which they had absolutely nothing new to add. And I think that\'s a wonderfully valid reason, don\'t you?

Anyway, I really see no reason to defend myself further, so if you really want to leave over such a small thing, then so be it. I\'m in no position to stop you.

Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Until the notepad is implemented, You can use notes area in quest window. Quests do not work atm, just get any quest from NPC and write Your notes In \"Your notes:\" field. I\'m not sure, where they are saved, on server side or in local file. I also don\'t know, how much text it can hold.

You can create shortcuts (scripts)  for commonly use sentences. There are only 30 slots, but it is _something_.

No need to take screenshots, we have logs, don\'t we ? You can review Your logs anytime. Check \"logs\" subdirectory in main planeshift directory. I often use second computer to have real-time access to my logs (playing with full screen turned on).

Cheers

EDIT: Unfortunately, notes in quests window can only have maximum of 255 characters. They are stored in database on the server.

Thanks for that Wired_Crawler I?ll give them a try, should cut down on the paperwork and save my aching writing hand :)

EDIT: Thats not much but i think it will do and better than nothing :) The journal side of things i can just put on an external for now. Lol I was thinking about putting stuff on my second system but my boss will kill me if I stop rendering its bad enough that i\'m spending so much time playing as it is.

?( WOW Myrddin

You used some pretty huge words there, Myrddin.

Are you a Lawyer or something?

Well I love the idea about the ingame notebook...

And well because it\'s something i would definitly use. it should really be put in the game.

Not only that it would be a great feature, but it\'s that it would a be very simple simple thing to add. it was a wonderful  idea. And by the way i don\'t mind if sombody posts something that has been already posted, because alot of stuf is posted but forgotten. And if Myrddin never posted this, alot of people probably wouldn\'t have remembered it.

And Karyuu, not trying to start something here but i\'ve seen alot of your postes and like 70% or more of the ones i\'ve seen have been negative in some way. Again not trying to start another argument here, but maby you should compliment a little bit more. Because nobody likes being criticized all the time. If everybody thinks i\'m wrong about this then tell me so , but please no more flaming in here. this is the wish list not about posting disagreements.

Cool game, love it. Love the forums too, just without all the drama though. :)

Sorry for being nosy, but why are you in such a hurry to write down notes when you\'re playing? Take your time and write so you can understand it. In PS\'s state, I can\'t possibly see why you would want to hurry about anything, seeing as there\'s almost nothing to do anyway. Unless of course you\'re fighting some big and bad monster, but who stops to take notes in the middle of a fight?! :)

I\'m personally one who favors handwritten notes more than yet another ingame feature (features destroy games), simply because it makes one feel that things which happen ingame also have an effect on things outside of the game, and it\'s probably also because I\'m so used to playing tabletop games where you don\'t really have yet another ingame feature available to you. You have to do with what your imagination gives you, and what your notes tell you.

I love taking notes of my games, and that\'s probably because I\'m the only person who used to do it, and my old GM used to punish everyone else for not doing it. :) Ahh those days of real RPing... *flashback*

PS. Closed the old thread to keep people from bumping up old, already answered questions.

Hi thanks for the question Kiva. I too spent many a happy hour throwing multi sided dice (the good old days Ahh) but in PS things just move too quickly. On a quest I bump into 4 or 5 people each chat lasting a log time. Plus keeping track of things I have to do and helping many people that run up and ask where something is. That\'s quest as set by guild master not NPC. Plus keeping an eye on the never-ending tells, chat, group and guild chat I look away for 3mins and find I\'ve 20 lines of text in each to read. Plus if I\'m not doing calligraphy my handwriting is atrocious I end up reading back ?M shrom fod at p...h ner the tre o.... but beware O.... ? :)

I would include a snapshot of my desk with bits of paper, backs of disk covers, anything I can write on and lots of A4 paper that in a rush I write on diagonally for some strange reason.

I love the notes too and think its Integral to any RP game that you keep track of things.

PS. My GM did the same lol but with online RPG the cat can\'t get at the dice :) sounds like you\'re one of the many people that gets more from PS in its early stage than most will when it\'s completed :))
I had enough of PS when they decided to release CB. :) Before then it was all fun, but not anymore, I\'m afraid.

EDIT: AHHHHHHhhh ^^^Phantom text ^^^ lol. I didn?t see PS in its infancy but from what I see now it?s a bit of a rat bashing contest. I have bumped into some people RPing but not many most just ask what sword level I?m on :(

Thanks to newbees that didnt search before posting, Karyuu is close to reach her 1000th post...

(is it really more usefull than Efflixy\'s ones ?  :D )

But notebook and notepad are different (:P) ... hum ... different words ! A lot of people come from non english speaking countries and unfortunately, nothing is classified. So you must be sure there would be a lot of double posts...

I think it would be interesting if someone is designed (and is ok) to write a general post (Important\'s one for example!)

And off course sweet karyuu, I think it could be a nice job for you  :]
