PS Forums & site etc..
« on: August 03, 2005, 04:23:45 pm »
I don\'t really know where this belongs, maybe the wishlist? i dont know.

I think one of the main things that is annoying me at the moment is where someone asks a question, and instead of either answering it properly, the reply is \"use the search function it\'s been asked before, and no i do not know where it is...\"

I\'m not sure if anyone has really noticed, but there are 178664 Posts in 15854 Threads...  Even i used the search funtion where some people have suggested it, but unfortunatly half of the words you need to use apear in almost every thread...   Do we know what section it\'s been posted in? do we know if they named the title properly?  are you refering to one made a couple day back, months or back in 2003?

The forums could easily be re-catergorised, have the forum delete any message past X amount of days since the last post and optionally have a \"hall of usful information\" section which isn\'t affect from the time-based expiration, and have a MOD move any usful information in there.

IMO isn\'t too hard to ask upon and isn\'t the most complicated thing on earth... an hour or so work if you figure out how to categorise the forums and find the scripts +know how to install (such as for date expire)

The other thing is that the main website is \"out dated\" that someone else pointed out in another thread.   While editing that will be time consuming and require a lot of re-work making an unoffical page with more up-to date info and so on isnt that hard. I have about 9GB of webspace with around 190+GB of avliable bandwidth left all paid for inadvanced for well over a year now, and i have a special domain name used for subdomain hosting (i\'m setting up a web hosting business so meh)

Anyway, it isn\'t hard for me to make basic information page, however it requires the community to help devlope it.   and optionally, instead of asking people to search the forums, hopfully they will just go to that site for information... and should the webmaster of planeshift is able to update the offical website, can simply grab the information from it

giving the devloper more time to devlope the game without wasting time documenting it.
^^

I take it no one cares then?

I have set the website up if anyone wants to help me make an upto date FAQ etc.. for the game.

Maybe suggests a couple of sections? and submit info on the game that we do know, that are set in stone and wont be changed from this update going onto the servers (like the races...) maybe somone has good screen shot of the races? etc..

Search works fine with enough suitable keywords and use of the filters. You using Search is easier than us coding an entire auto-expire system which would be more hassle than it\'s worth.

The only reason there\'s so many threads is because people don\'t search in the first place. Go figure.

Lukus,

If you want to build a library of info on PS, by all means, do so. It would probably be best if you simply found out as much info as you could and compiled it together. Then, if something is missing or wrong, people can send in corrections. There are already some sites that are compiling libraries on different aspects of the game but it doesn\'t mean that you can\'t too. Almost every MMO has more than one info/library site dedicated to them.

I agree that sometimes the regulars here are a bit too an... quick to jump on others with \"Use the Search\" replies. Quite often, one has to read through a bunch of useless replies and arguments to hopefully get to an answer. Even then, an answer isn\'t always as complete as you\'d like it to be. Sometimes an answer is only in threads that started with completely different subject and dwindled off topic into an answer you might need. For example, I remember someone asked about Klyros, and they were given a reply \"Use the search\" and a link with a subject line \"Klyros 3D model\" (or something very similar). And yet, a person is expected to dig through technical 3D modeling discussion only to find out whether Klyros will really fly or glide, and how exactly it would be implemented. I\'ve also found some outdated views on things because many older threads have only taken older PS releases into account, such as MB, and not CB.

I\'ve made some daring but constructive posts that show that I\'ve at least done some research but even then some people complained.

I\'ve been reading guides and numerous threads, and I still have some questions. For example, I wanted to make a thread to inquire about the \"Black Flame\" because no amount of search brings anything other than a basic info that is given in the History. I\'ve used an opportunity in \"Phinheas\" thread to inquire about it but he only stated he\'ll note it down for future analysis on his page. I\'d bet if I made a new thread about it, I\'d get \"use the search\", and when I\'d confront them that search has nothing new on \"Black Flame\", they\'ll say, \"well, that\'s what it\'s supposed to show, that no info has been given\". LOL. I just wish people here relaxed a little once in a while. :)

PS I think the biggest problem with Search is that it often returns posts with bad subject lines, something that is very vague, such as \"I have a question...\". They should put key-words in their subject lines and not just the actual post. Or maybe mods should edit the subject lines into something more specific.
