UGh, Red Screen of Death Crash!
« on: October 03, 2005, 05:22:03 am »
I load, it works, all the way up until I hit passed loading GUI and putting me into the game, but when it goes to place me in game, a red screen of death flashes and crashes me to the desktop. After all this time, I won\'t be discouraged! I will get into this game and if anyone knows of what I mean, please reply and help a fellow in need!

Red screen of death..? Bizarre. This just may warrant a screenshot :) How about a generic checklist:

Have you made sure that you\'ve updated both the game and your graphics card drivers, disabled sound, and made sure you do not have \"Load All Maps\" enabled? (The options for map loading and sound are in the PlaneShift setup application, same directory as the updater. If you\'re on Windows, it can also be accessed through Start -> Programs -> PlaneShift Crystal Blue -> PlaneShift Setup.)
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

I really recommend to post a screenshot and eventually, try to run the client with --console.

For doing this go to start->Programs->Planeshift Crystal Blue and then right click over Planeshift Tech Demo, click properties and ...
You should get this in Address or Destination.
\"C:\\Programmi\\PlaneShift Crystal Blue\\psclient.exe\"

Modify it with :
\"C:\\Programmi\\PlaneShift Crystal Blue\\psclient.exe\" --console

Then, eventually post the latest things you get on console before the program closes down.

I have a screenshot of the screen when it reds out, just like I said. It is not impressive, just a red screen. I did it with --console and stuff, and I got to past GUI, and it was putting me into the game, because I heard music, so I know it puts me into the game.

On the otherhand, I haven\'t noticed anything different, and I am guessing OpenGL is required for the game?

OpenGL is required.

Show us the screenshot using imageshack.us
Show us the content of the console using http://www.rafb.net/paste

Ahh I see, thats the reason. I\'m using for a video card:

Nvidia GeForce3 Ti 200.

No Open GL to my imagination, because no open GL was the cause of me not being able to play Shadowbane, another online game.

Can openGL be had by less then buying a new card? Like a driver that\'ll allow OpenGL to be put on the card, or whatnot?

You must get the latest OpenGL drivers from http://www.nvidia.com
If you download and install those then it should work fine.

This is what a Red Screen Of Death looks like:

It only happens on Windows Vista (Longhorn) though, so either this guy is running a beta OS, or we have a case of \"putting the floppy into the hard disc\" syndrome (aka. using technical terms without knowing what they mean).

I wouldn\'t expect anyone to be able to make a screenshot of an RSOD without running Vista inside an emulator, since once the system is dead, there\'s no way to make a screenshot.

In fact there\'s a registry entry that can be changed so the bluescreens of error so commonly seen in windows can get the colour you want. It has been a joke between programmers on \"how to get rid of blue screens of death\" and then tell how to change the colour to orange, yellow, green...
Obviously Microsoft now realized that and seems to want to add a red colour as a background, because, as everyone knows, a filled red screen reporting an error of the system makes relax and calm the user... (irony)

/me shakes his head and sighs.

No, the BSOD is still blue, the Red Screen Of Death is for errors that are more serious than the blue ones.

What in the world is more serious than crashing?!...  O.o Does Bill  Gates reach out of the computer and stab you to death, or something?....

There are various things worse then crashing. For example, crashing because of a hardware failure can be considered worse.

\"Your registry is corrupted. Reinstall to contine\"

\"Windows has accidentally deleted all your important files. Press any key\"

\"Windows has just found a way to reflash your BIOS with zeroes. Replace BIOS and press any key\"

\"Your system seems to be overclocked too much. Replace magic smoke to continue\".

I browsed nvidia and couldn\'t find the open GL links, if anyone can please link me to the nvidia site link for OPENGL drivers, I\'ll be muchly appreciative.

Also, if you can elaborate on the \"Howtos\" of OPENGL And last I checked, I only run Direct3d, with no openGL, so anywhere I can get the base drivers posting a link for it would be phenom. thanks.

All nvidia detonator or forceware drivers have compatibility with opengl. Some with 1.5, some with 1.0 well that depends, but just choose one of them and download it for your system.
If you have an old graphic card, you don\'t need to download the latest driver, try one of the middle, that is not 7x but 6x or even 4x to say something.
