Problems with a firewall...
« on: October 08, 2005, 05:37:32 pm »
Well, first off the Durham Uni ITS, sorry I\'ll go into a closet for this.... Right, I come to you knowledgeable mac users with a problem. The ITS (whom I unfortunately must use this year) is using an http firewall to block just about everything, including Planeshift. My good friend/neighbor/in-game guild sentinel has set up a system on his PC to get around this by encrypting all outgoing data through the firewall to a server which unencrypts it and sends it on its way. I use a mac, do any of you have any ideas of how I can do the same or get through/around the firewall in some other fashion? Has anyone been able to make planeshift work from behind an http firewall? I am not terribly knowledged about this sort of thing.

Many thanks to all.

I\'m not that knowledgeable about this, either, but I\'d try to see if you can get Planeshift to use the same port as HTTP traffic. While not the best of solutions, it would let you play. There may be a better solution, but Google knows better than I do. ;)

I\'m not a mac user, but the problem is the same as I had last year.  It\'s basically impossible, and if you ever did get it to work, it would be nearly unplayable since you would need to get it going through port 80 on tcp/ip.  There is a reason that games don\'t use tcp/ip, and this is because of extreme lag issues.  So, by all means, try to get PS working through a tunnel on port 80, it will be neigh unplayable because of lag.  The better option is simply to email your IT and ask them to open the ports PS uses (I don\'t remember them offhand).  Mine didn\'t have a problem with it.
