The updater is talking a lot of time... and it's NOT lag
« on: October 12, 2005, 07:27:40 am »
Well... been trying to play this game with no avail. Decided to update... mm very slow, so I check the forums and get the other mirror. Fast enough for me, and it goes cool.

Thing is, I\'ve been \"updating\" for 2+ hours and now it\'s going 2% (with a 25k/s max connection) ... so I know it\'s not my connection, nor it\'s lag. Being a game developer (and player) I don\'t think it\'s a clever idea to add files to a ZIP file that way, because, it\'s slow and causes lots of HD lag, and no, don\'t go telling me to get a new HD because I don\'t have the money to, trust me that if I could I would.

Now, as a suggestion, and that\'ll maybe help lots of users here too, I know it\'s possible... it may be tedious, but it\'ll be a great improvement... to please, pretty please, use another updating method? I don\'t think users would mind to have subfolders instead of ZIP files, stuff would download faster. And if the installer size is the problem, you can use ZIP files for the installation, use a script/program/.BAT/whatever for uncompressing the ZIP files and then deleting them. What will be done with this? yeah, a heck of a lot more files, but faster updating (and loading, because uncompressing big files is also slow). The upload server\'s speed is =awesome=... the process done after the download it\'s what is making it horrible... at least in my opinion :(

Another suggestion would be to add update patches in any format you want, for updating all in one shot and not the \"downloading-adding-=waiting=-verifying-downloading-adding...\" method (which will make users happier too, you all will get some weight off your back, and everyone will be happier), or at least, allow some annonymous CVS access and let people download normally, then use a installer/scrpt/whatever for updating it all in one shot...

Just my 2 cents... :)

By the way... any way to make the adding-to-zip routine faster, at least, without making me buy a new HD with money I don\'t have and can\'t earn? thanks :)

Edit: Forgot this: I\'m talking about the Windows version, not the Linux/MacOS one :P

Things are being redone within the updater.  Wait for the next update.  (yes, I\'m aware of the irony... :P )

try looking for the solone workaround, its an alternate server, but yoiu have to edit some xml for it, advance at your own riskiness

just search by post for \'solone\' up at the clicky button called \'search\'

That different server is almost useless, it only downloads the registry faster and then when it comes to downloading the real update files it goes back to 1kb,,, There just isn\'t any good way of getting it. even if you wait for 2 days it will just freeze up and you will have to start over again

Hmm, this is odd - I get 60-70 kb/s on the alternate site here.

Modifying zip files in Windows is slow. It is much faster in Linux and I guess it is not a problem with Max OSX either.

Planeshift uses Crystal Space VFS (virtual file system) and any complains about it should go to Crystal Space and not to the Planeshift development team (and I\'m not from that team  8) ).

Either way, being VFS or not, ZIP files of that size take long in updating, overall adding/replacing small files. Downloading the full ZIP or downloading everything and then updating all in one shot would be better ;). Hey, I work with ZIPs since DOS 6.2 :-/ and PKZIP and PKUNZIP were the only ones available back then...
