What actually works at the moment? and other queries
« on: November 26, 2005, 11:38:20 pm »
Hello all. I\'m trying to kill time while waiting the 2 or 3 days that my computer insists it will need to download this whole game.... :P Don\'t you just love dial-up? I\'ve been reading the manual and some of the posts on the various forums here, trying to acquaint myself with everything.

The friend who told me about Planeshift isn\'t online right now, as she lives on the other side of the planet, so I\'m going to bug you guys with my questions instead, and hope I\'m not being overly repetitive.

First, and most importantly, what actually works in the game? I\'ve been noticing a lot of references to quests being broken, monsters being unattackable, etc. Plus, there seems to be a lot that hasn\'t been added yet. (Not complaining, just want to know what I will actually be able to do once I get the whole she-bang set up)

Does my character start out with anything, inventory-wise? My only other mmorpg experience is with runescape, and you start out with some very basic equipment there.

I\'m sure I\'ll remember my other questions later, I\'ll just keep tossing them into this thread, save space :)

I\'m a little nervous, I\'ll admit, I\'ve never actually played a RPG that had actual RP in the G, lol. I\'m not sure where to start with a character.

Thanks for help in advance, I apologize for the rambling, that\'s kind of my style, unfortunately. :p

New characters don\'t start with anything at the moment. Characters that have been transferred with crystals from the previous version, Molecular Blue, got to transer those crystals into the current trias. But it\'s not really hard to start, if the NPC client is up :) Find your way to the Hydlaa sewers (or Akkaio warehouse) and try to hunt down a few rats for their various parts - the merchants hunger for them, for whatever reason ;) After a while you could get yourself a weapon, and hunt with style.

As for what\'s implemented/available:

Quote
List of implemented stats/skills:
(sorted by the tabs used in skill window)

Stats:
All

Combat Skills:
Sword
Knives & Daggers
Axe
Light Armor
Melee

Magic Skills:
All but Anti-Magic

Job Skills:
Mining
(Crafting will be implemented soon)

Various Skills:
Lockpicking (Though there aren\'t any locks to pick yet)

There used to be a thread with a list and list only of working quests on the forums, but you\'ll have to search around a bit to find it... :) You can also read through the news on the main website, as with every large update, changes are listed.

Don\'t worry about never RPing before, it\'s not that hard :) And you\'ve already stumbled onto the Guide to Role-Play here, and many people would be glad to help you out in-game. We all had to start somewhere. Hope you enjoy your time here!

Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

You seem to be a good person, so I\'ll tell you. You start out with nothing in your invintory, and the basic way to make money is to kill rats in the sewers, or the rat house. The sewers are in Hydlaa, where most races start (until their home village/town is implimented), and the rat house is in Ojaveda, where Enkidukai start. Normally, the best places for roleplaying are the Taverns. You have Kada-El\'s Tavern, in Hydlaa, and The Broken Door Inn, in Ojaveda.

There is a spot in front of Harnquist where most people hang out at, sometimes for RP, sometimes for simple chatting OOC. If they use brackets, they talk OOC, or if they name a real life event or occurance, it is also OOC. If they talk in an accent that seems to be a way they would talk in 500-1000 A.D., they are roleplaying. There are few types of ways to fight, so far. Melee, Swords, Axes, Knives & Daggers, or Magic. Melee has the best speed, Swords are the all-round groups of weapons, Axes are the strongest and slowest weapons, Knives and Daggers hit fast, but don\'t do much damage, and Magic varies depending on what spell you are using.
Also, you have armor, Light Armor to be exact, and with a high enough level you can block the strongest of attacks. The armor doesn\'t appear on your character model yet, so don\'t get your hopes up.

The magic spells so far, are: Summon Missile, Flame Burst, Weakness, Defensive Wind, Rock Armor, and Freeze. Summon Missile is a long-ranged attack, it hits low damage, but it is the best way if you have enough mana to cast a good number of them. Flame Burst is a short-ranged spell that hits a bit higher than Summon Missile, and I believe it is the most powerful spell available to players. Weakness, slowly drains HP from your opponent, and if you cast it enough times, it drains very fast, but if it kills your opponent, you do not recieve duel points/experience, so make sure to finish with a real attack. Freeze, drains HP from your opponents also, but you can cast it from a range similar to Summon Missile, and it drains HP a bit faster, but there is a time limit to how long it drains. Rock Armor defends you from heavy attacks, but it disappears fast. Defensive Wind defends you from repeated attacks, since it lasts a lot longer than Rock Armor, so take your pick on which one you wish to use.

EDIT: Gah, Karyuu beat me to it.

Check out these links before you play. (Some reading material for while you wait. :D)  They contain useful information for how the game works and how to RP.

Thanks guys, this has been helpful so far. Yeah, I did try to read as much as I could about everything before I headed out into noobish question-asking territory ;) (including most of those recommendations, but thanks for listing them) I knew the vague location of the rats, but the info about taverns and such was new and good to know. Although I\'m sure I\'d figure that out as soon as I landed in Hydlaa and had a good look around....

I know the basics behind role-playing, it\'s just trying to come up with a character of my own, especially when I don\'t have much to go on for the \"communal\" history or culture or whatever. I suppose that\'s true for everyone, in a way. I just wish there was more about the different races than what\'s in the manual---even something as basic as the sorts of names they prefer. I know, I can make up whatever I want. I\'m babbling again and don\'t really know how to express what I mean. I guess I just feel like i\'m reinventing the wheel or something, making up a backstory that may have no relation to anyone else\'s view of the planeshift world, or whatever.

I do hope they add crafting things soon, though. I\'m not much of a hack-and-slash player, and I hate the fact that I need to kill things just to get the money to train for anything else....

Well, for names, you should try and come up with something to fit the race. For example, make Kran names sound heavy, or bold (if you know what I mean), Klyros names are best out of the random generator, Enkidukai should have nimble names, maybe ones that you can pronounce fast. For Xacha and Ylians, you should just give them a human-ish first and last name. For Ynnwn, name them anything that doesn\'t have to do with color, it\'s annoying when you see someone named \"Redman Reddy\" running around Hydlaa.

Lol, yeah, that\'s exactly the sort of thing I was thinking of. I\'m thinking of possibly being a Nolthrir character. I was playing around with the name generators and came up with \"Darah Tisunai\" as a possible name.  I was going to go with Dhara instead, but that looks a bit too much like Dharma for my tastes...lol. I may still do that anyway, I don\'t know. I\'m babbling again.
