OpenGL mode
« on: December 16, 2002, 05:50:02 am »
I\'ve played games that use OpenGL before, but haven\'t been able to get OpenGL mode to work with Planeshift.

I have a 1.1 Ghz Celeron processor, 256 Mb ram, and about 10 GB of free space on my harddrive. I\'m running Windows 98 SE, but I think it probably has something to do with my graphics card. I have an old card, a Voodoo 2 I believe. It has 16 Mb ram, but some fairly recent drivers. When the game starts, about a third of the graphics are displayed at the top of the screen, and another third at the bottom. In the middle is just black. Then, basically the same thing when the user is supposed to choose \"Create\", \"Quit\", or \"Connect\". I have tried changing the resolution sizes in the PSClient.cfg file, and switching fullscreen, but everything I\'ve tried has seemed to have no effect.

Thanks to all those that can help, and for other posts that I read through. A lot of the other posts helped me resolve other problems.

Hmm, it could be caused by a bad opengl plugin.  I believe that the plugin packed with the demo was bad on some graphics cards.  Aside from that I cannot think of  anything off-hand that could cause these problems.

I was able to log in for the first time today. It ran pretty slow because I\'m running software mode, but I see a lot of potential. I\'ll keep checking back for updates =). Thanks Andrew, that makes sense.

I recommend you take the card out, throw it in the trash, and go buy a $50 Geforce 2.

did you already buy that card ?
I hope not, because ther is one thing you should know:
the ti4200-cards with 64mb ram are faster and cheaper than the ones with 128mb.
This is due to the ram chips that are used on that cards.

so i would recommend you to buy a card with only 64mb of ram, trust me, it\'s enough.

Really, I would think that it would depend on the actual card maker (ie Gainward vs ELSA) for the quality of memory used.  Do you have any proof/references (i.e. a website) for this?  Are you talking about a specific card, card maker, or the nVidia reference design?

By the way, the reason that OpenGL did not work on his Voodoo card is that OpenGL does not work on Voodoo cards.  Voodoo cards used Glide.

To summarize, OpenGL = NOT FOR VOODOO.

And no, wrappers wont work, wrappers are retarded.
There are 10 kinds of people in this world.  Those that understand binary, and those that dont.
