Weird...
« on: May 18, 2006, 08:47:53 pm »
I was browsing the forums, then I started to hear music. I looked around the house, but my TV's were off. Also the sound disappeared as I walked in the other room. I came back and then started to hear it again. I realized it was my computer, but nothing was causing it. I turned up my speakers and heard it louder. Then I closed all my windows, but it was still playing even on my desktop. This is the first time I've heard music without something running it. =/

Another possibility is that it's just picking up a signal from another electronic device, or it's suddenly become sympathetic to radio signals.  It's probably a grounding issue.

Well the thing is, it doesn't sound like a radio. I mean, unless it's some cheesy jazz station, I don't think that's what I'm hearing. It'll come on for a few minutes, turn off a minute, then play a different song, each one of them are jazzy, but without any singing. The recent one sounded like it had thunder in it.

Sometimes hidden popups can play odd music. I have had a few of those. Reboot?

If you haven't allready, install and run trial versions of:

zone alarm
adaware
spybot search and destroy
Spy Sweeper
trojan hunter
CWShredder

After you're done, run the following online virus scans, using Internet Explorer:

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

If that still doesn't work, download and run a program called "Hijack this" and look for suspicious entries.

One spyware/adware program may not be enough - I'd recommend the combination of Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy at the least.
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Not as strange as you think.  Turn over any electrical device.  It complies with part 14 of the FCC rules:  This device must not cause any harmful interference, and must accept any interference it receives, including that which may cause undesired operation.

I've had computer speakers play what was going on on the telephone, a few lower band AM stations that were close together as if it were switching channels, a TV broadcast, and my walkie talkies.  Apparantly, the magic is in getting these signals into the air, there isn't a fancy decoding of the rest, just turning patterns into sounds.  I wonder though why it happens all the time.  If you are getting these sounds after running all the spyware and virus solutions, then try getting a bit of aluminum foil, and wrapping the input signal cord in it, and the power as well.  It may look goofy but it could help.
