All of the sound is choppy, how do I fix this?   Is there some way that I can change what drivers/mode that the game uses?

Bug in the CS Windows sound renderer, and fixed for next release.  (I think there was a bit in Linux too)  Just wait until then.

Is there anything I can do about it, short of turning it off?

build from cvs

Can you elaborate? What is CVS?

If you mean C++ Visual Studio then I can't because I'm running win 98 se and VC needs ME to install.

You'll have to compile using the latest source - you'd need either MSVC or MinGW. It's a bit complicated, but the IRC channel #planeshift-build on Freenode can offer help :) However, fixes are coming soon so for now it would just be easier to turn off the sound if it is being a bother.

Yes, building from source isn't usually a realistic suggestion for most people.  steuben was being sarcastic, though it is the only real way to fix it at the moment.  Your best bet is to either ignore it or turn off sound for the time being, if it's really bad.

I turned off music only. Of course, I've lost much in playing without all that incredible good PS musics, but keeping only the sound effects minimizes the sound problem without going into a "mute" game. It's just a suggestion. I hope that fix come "soon" (I'm hoping this for some months now), but eventually it'll come...

The fix has been "here" for those who build from source and do full testing, for quite a while.  The people who just install the packages just have to wait.
