Technical issues hurt my outlook on the game
« on: July 19, 2006, 08:12:10 pm »
I will say beforehand that yes, i am having a similar problem that was covered in the board, but i didn't find topics relating to ALL my problems. To start, i have the application error that others have posted about, and the only solution i see to that is that i wouldnt have the right requirements, or to uninstall and re-install the game. Another thing is when i run the updater, it says something about the updater not being found, and it has to search for a backup, and when THAT'S done loading, the updater closes itself. when i try to open it again, it says "program has performed an illegal operation and must be closed" or something of that aspect. the only way i can run the updater again is to reboot. okay. when i reboot, the same thing happens. "found another updater, going to fetch it" and when it's done, it closes and i can't open it again without rebooting. the client does that too. i FINALLY got the updater to do a REAL update. and i breathed a sigh of relief. then when i went to start the client, i forgot that i didn't have an account. duh. so i made my account, had the email verification and all, when i went to start the client again, it said there was an error and could not run. okay. rebooted and neither the client or the updater would work (i thought i might have needed yet anothr update already). when i looked on the board, i saw that someone else had a similar problem, and the only way to fix THAT was with an uninstall and reinstall.

i may only have basic DSL which isn't that much faster than dialup, but i KNOW i have the right requirements to run the program. i saw on the site what i needed, and checked my computer to make sure i had it all and i do. i doubt it's because of my net connection because even though it's slow compared to other DSL and cable, it's still good. so when i have the specs to play other high quality MMOs such as Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, and Final Fantasy XI, i'm pretty sure this one would be no problem. Yet if i have to constantly reboot or even completely uninstall and reinstall and have to go through all that every time something goes wrong or windows wants to be a 'tard, i'm not sure i want to play this game. i've heard good things about it, but with all this i'm not sure i want to play THAT bad to go through all of this. is there any possible way i can stop this runaround dilly-dallying with the program and actually get to PLAY for once? please help. and if possible, send all replies to my email. i'm very forgetful when it comes to checking forums and message boards. my email is ******@yahoo.com

i will greatly appreciate any tips or advice on how to work with this thing so i can finally see what others told me was so fun, because this auto-closing of programs and constant rebooting, and reinstalling is already getting rediculous. it's been two days and i've gone through this procress literally six times until i decided to post here. thanks.

Read this, then this, and preferably all the other stickies too.  If can't do anything after that, then no, you can't do anything here.  This is not a "game" in the sense that you are using the word, and you are expected to have basic computer abilities to get things set up.  This is an alpha-test and we don't yet have a fully working delivery system.  You'll just have to deal with that.

you know what i meant. and i doubt dealing with those types of errors and issues are "basic" computer knowledge. i understand it's an alpha test but never have i seen anything like this. which is why i voiced my concern. if i had problems like this with OTHER programs of the sort, i wouldn't have bothered posting because i would have expected as such. i have read both topics you suggested and the same things have occured for me. the auto-closing, errors, and such. i know it's not my computer and i wonder if anyone else are having similar problems at this point in time. and if not, why only me? i HAVE the requirements needed to run it, i followed the directions for proper installation, updating, and patching, yet i'm running into the same obstacles. guess it just doesn't like me *LOL* well thanks anyway. i guess that does it for me and planeshift  :(

I'm not saying you did it in the wrong order, but I am just checking to make sure, because the order made a difference in my case.

1- clean install (don't update if it asks you if you want to) 3.015
2- patch 3.015b
3- update

0. Reboot

I was quite suprized to hear many people getting install problems because they had a stalled client still running.  It seems the basic computer debugging tool known as simpley rebooting is no longer common knowledge.  It's somewhere around -3 on the list of things you should know to be able to touch a computer.

And, by the way, in Quin's list above you can run the updater after a clean install.  It'll bork things, but if you then put in the patch and update again it should work.  So, the ordering of 2 & 3 there is only the best way to do it.  This is not a rigid process here.  You just need to get all the new crap.

Look, I've gotten complaints from more than a few people saying that "doesn't work", but every one has messed it up somehow.  (usually, it's people who just moved the zip to the PS dir and wonder why it does squat)  The reason we aren't jumpping to your aid is that we've all done it and it's working fine.  I have put everything you need to know in the stickies and there's nothing else I can really tell you.  Whether you like it or not, it is not our job to teach you how to use a computer.  Yes, knowing how to extract a zip into a dir is very basic computer knowledge.  I try to explain it to you, but if that sticky doesn't help, again, you're screwed.

The main problem with this thread is not computer knowledge, but posting.  You haven't actually said what your problem is.  Say so, and I just might be able to post some help...
