Lag? When will it be fixed?
« on: July 21, 2006, 02:35:34 pm »
This is not a topic complaining about the lag.

Ever since i down loaded this game last year iv been getting loads of lag. I asked around and they said they knw about this and will be fixed. And i tryed to play again this yea againr and still get just as much lag?

So when about will this laggyness be fixed and i be able to play with out so much lag?

And I meet all the system requirements.

If it’s my graphics card then maybe you should think about not making the system requirements SOO high... You make this game wanting to make it the best but at the same time make sure a lot of people can’t play just because they don’t have the best of the best in computers.

Feel free to suggest something. Otherwise, understand that it is not as simple as just saying "don't make the requirements so high".

I sense others reading. I hope you are flameproof.

I thought You bought a new graphics card (as You wrote in the other thread).

Are You still on dial-up connection ? Maybe bad communication with server can be the cause of Your problem ? I think I could do some tests to compare performance on simulated slow/unreliable connection.

I thought you were talking about net lag at the beginning, and indeed there's a bit of this specially when players connected reach an amount greater than 120 or so.

But no, it was just graphic lag...
I'll say here the classical tip, that Bereror gently pointed out, a lot of time ago... and that is certainly worth trying.

Probably, if you used now ctrl+alt+del to see the cpu and memory usage, planeshift is using close to 100% of the cpu time.
Here's something you can try to have a less "laggy" game experience.

When in game:

Go to options-graphics-details

You'll see fps cap there, at a value of 62. Lower it till 30.
Save changes.

Run around the world a bit, you'd see no visual performance decrease.
Check again your CPU usage, it should be now lower.
Let's see if this causes less lag for you.  :sorcerer:

You make this game wanting to make it the best but at the same time make sure a lot of people can’t play just because they don’t have the best of the best in computers.

"Be brilliant, faster!"

And why not use those extra speical polys that make everything look AWESOME instead of good, but at the same time require no graphics card at all! :D

My computer's a piece of junk in gaming terms, and it runs PlaneShift just fine. Almost every intensive 3D MMO in existence has higher requirements than PS. Until some major breakthroughs are made in technology as a whole, we'll only be able to make small adjustments. And we already have - we've switched to DDS format for textures, your install is smaller now than it has ever been, etc.

So just in case, post your system specs for us.

Hmmm, Must be me. But I am in the oppinion that PS is one of the few games out there that do not need the best cards in the world. I have a couple of comps and runs nicely on the old one no probs.

I can put PS at it's max and not have any lag, I put other games and I'm not that lucky

If you think its down to a poor Graphics card you could try the downsampling textures option in the pssetup utility, I assume that this uses less graphics card memory, please correct me if im wrong, also the usual thing of downloading the most up-to-date drivers, make sure you have anti-aliasing turned off in your display properties, same goes for anisotropic filtering. or try running it in a lower resoloution.
the downsampling textures option makes my system much more responsive, but I dont use it because I would rather have lag and pretty graphics :)

Yes lots of things can contibute to what most call lag, but are actually low frame rates. (lag to me means congested/ slow network traffic)
If you run windows, check the task list after a fresh boot up. If it has a scroll bar, you likely have unneccesary services & apps running in the background eating up CPU ticks.    Look into disabling extraneous services & apps, or at least changing them from auto start to manual start.
Apps/services that use network traffic, like chat, bittorent, file & printer sharing (if used) are good candidates to turn off too.

Posssibly your graphics driver has a Open GL section in the display properties, like mine does, possibly making some minor changes there would improve performance.  If you've lowered the graphic demands as low as you can, try running with the -fullbright  option. You'll missout on some cool lighting effecs, but frame rates will likely improve.

Yes i was going to buy a new one... But got thinking... Yes i really like the looks of this game. But is it really worth speanding a loty of money on it just for planeshift? I mean my computer runs EVERY game out there just fine as it is.

Ill try what you guys have suggested. I hope it works.

I don't know what you have now and what you are looking to buy, but computer upgrades are never a bad idea. If you can save away $150-200, you can get an awesome card.

Erm ...I think I said it before, PS runs pretty good on my ATI Radeon Mobility X600 64MB RAM on AMD64 running Linux - which's not exactly top-notch ...especially with the poor excuse of ATI that they call "Linux drivers".

Try running oblivion.... right..... your computer runs EVERY game fine. PS runs at 60 FPS for me at all times, even the waterfall, but Oblivion 5 FPS. THAT is why I am buying a new GPU. For TES4.

I'd love to play Oblivion ...but a) it's a laptop b) i wouldn't spend my money on Cedega only for one game c) i already spend enough time with PS (and NWN)
