Weapon Repair Question
« on: July 22, 2006, 03:21:16 pm »
I'm hoping I can word this so I don't give out too much information, but it may be difficult to not give out too much info and ask the question at the same time.. so bear with me on this please.

I'm trying to level in weapon repair, and after many tries of 0 repair for 0 seconds, a friend finally suggested that I needed to level up in a specific combat skill in order to make weapon repair more effective (or effective at all!). I had been trying to repair weapons that I do have a level in, but to no avail, and I really didn't want to bother with getting levels in the combat skill the friend suggested I need experience in. So it seems that I (and every other weapon smithy) is sort of stuck having to level up in one specific combat skill even though we may have no intention of  using that particular skill in the immediate future. I had to stop training in my weapon of choice to level in another combat skill so I can repair my weapon of choice.

Is this an accurate perception on my part? And is this something that will change in the future?

As a new player with a fairly high beginning weapon repair level, it would be nice to be able to repair the weapons I actually have a level in, and actually want to use, without having to level up in a combat skill in which I'm starting at 0.

Those who understand numbers and those who don't.

afaik, reparing weapons (or shield) skill isn't implemented.

See this: http://www.hydlaa.com/bugtracker/bug.php?op=show&bugid=1955&pos=3
for my opinion about it.

Basically, since now quality is implemented, something had to be put in game to prevent having lots of useless weapons (garbage) around. What was implemented is a command that, I think, anyone can use. The command is /repair . I am not aware of you having to be an expert dwealing any weapon in order to use that command. Simply put, that command is a workaround till the actual repair weapon (or shield) skills are implemented.

If you look in the Player Guide there is an example of how to Add New Shortcuts to the Shortcut Menu in-game. It also tells you how to add more than one shortcut command to a single Button. I have a Shortcut Button called "Loot" [I think it was as a default setting that came with my PS Client] - the command for this is: /loot

I have added the shortcut command: /repair

to this after the /loot and on the next line. Now, when I Loot a dead spawn, I get a bonus repair to my weapon! :)

NOTE: the /repair command only works on weapons that are equipped in your RIGHT HAND - if you fight with two weapons, you will have to swap the weapon in your left hand over to your right hand in the Inventory Screen and click the "Loot" Button again.

- running PlaneShift Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.11) Client, on an Apple iMac G5 2GHz PowerPC processor, 2GB DDR SDRAM, an ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card with 128MB VRAM, a 20-inch active-matrix LCD widescreen display, and a 250GB Serial ATA hard drive... so what's your excuse, huh?

Another observation (second hand in this case)
I was talking to another character last week and he mentioned that he could repair most of his weapons, but there was one or two that he couldn't (all of his weapons were swords).  He said that he would get a message that said he wasn't skilled enough to repair that weapon (I don't remember what he said the exact wording of the message was). He had a repair weapon skill one or two levels higher than mine and he had also tried to get training in Repair Weapon (which I haven't yet done).  And as Laragorn has mentioned, it appeared that I would get more quality increases with each attempt than he did.  -Again to qualify: this was a week ago, and I have noticed changes in the repair function since then, so things may have changed for him.

Look at workmanager.cpp and scroll down to psWorkManager::HandleRepair(). I'm quite sure there are many people who can read the sources :P The rest was already explained by Nilrem.

For more expensive weapons you need to be more skilled to repair them and practicing the repair skill is currently not implemented (no way to level up). Everything will be improved soon(tm) like many other things in Planeshift.

I will be able to repair my Battle Axes soon!(tm)  :)  That is good news to hear.

When the repair skill is fully implemented, will there be any information obtainable from NPC's or books explaining the experience required for certain Items?  There was a char with lvl 15 in Repair weapons that tried to repair my Iron Battle Axes but he was not skilled enough. Maybe some books in the library with information on how far a person needs to progress to accomplish certain actions would help.  Anyhoo, thanks for adding the new features!  They really do enhance gameplay.
