Is server really down ?
« on: July 29, 2006, 07:59:15 pm »
Hello all,

I'm Sarah, and I'm new to PlaneShift.

I registered on the web site, activated my account, then downloaded the client.
First, BT wasn't working... I got arround 3 KB in like 1 hour, so I downloaded with http, sorry :'(
I wonder is there is really a problem with your BT server or my network installation. I have a lot of problems with it right now (router forgets all my firewall rules, reastart, then block connection, etc.)

Next, I installed the client, (xxx.15) then applied the patch for updater. My installation directory is "E:\Program Files (x86)\PlaneShift Crystal Blue".

I launched updater, and proceeded with downloads. Everything was ok.
I launched the game, then...
First, it was really slow : mouse pointer was near to be unable to move, etc. All the compluter was so slow...
I entered my email, passord, then connected.

Next, the problems started : I think I would seen some 3D models for character creation, but I got big grey blocks instead. Seems a litte buggy

So, I tried to select a race or whatever to the left side of the screen, then got a warining about missing 3D models for this character. Ok...
While I was trying to click on "Ok", I got a second message : "server is shuting down". Hmpf. :-\

Next, I launched the setup utility. As I have a really good graphic card (ATI X850XT, I changed all parameters to max, and to my current resolution : 1920x1200)
I launched the game. This time, client is fast. Nice.
But now, server is flagged as off.

So, I wonder if I have problems with my config (I think about my router) of forgot opening some ports ? Or the server is really down ?

Thanks in advance !

*edit*

I forgot a important "detail"...

I'm using Windows Vista beta 2.
That could explain some compatibilities issues. :beta:

But I'm also playing WOW by example, and tried ATITD for several day, and hadn't these problems.

At this point I'd really suspect Vista to be the culprit. We're not guaranteeing stability on that OS at the moment, simply because (I think) no one on the team has a Vista machine and it's something way too new to worry about.. :}

Concerning server downtime, check the sticky "Server Status" thread in the Server section of the forums. It will tell you how to check whether the server is infact unavailable or something is up with a connection between you.

Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Uh... yeah, big detail.  Good Vista graphics card drivers may or may not exist and work correctly with CS/PS.

So, step one:  Update your drivers to the newest from the manufacturer, not MS.
Step two:  The network voodoo you'll need to know is here.
Step three:  Check here to see if/when the server is/was up.  If the stats pane shows players on, and the report time is not way out of date, then it's currently up.

I doubt that Windows Vista has any working OpenGL drivers. Games using DirectX might be working, but PlaneShift (CrystalSpace) requires OpenGL to work.

I thought so too, however some have got it working.  It depends on the card manufacturer.

Definitely not a good idea to run ANY game on Win Vista beta 2 ;)
