I have never had $1,500 to sink into a rig.  My current build is $400-ish, before monitor.
Could you run Oblivion?
The key to manipulative bargaining is to ask for something twice as big as what you want, then smile and nod when you are talked down to your original wish. You are still young, my apprentice, and have much to learn in the ways of the force. -UtM

Play it with graphics and speed high enough so it would be fun?
Out of curiosity and envy, where do you buy your parts?

There are many good online stores with great prices on hardware. But there is always a one man shop with great prices in every town.
I ussually make it a rule never to buy first generation anything, 3rd and 4th are always more stable not to mention a lot cheaper.
I start by finding a MoBo I like, watch for a sale and grab it, then CPU the same way. It took me a year and a half to build the one I have now, it is far from state of the art, but there is little I cannot do.
