I'll have to take Finara's answer. There were two portals. Well, that's it for today folks. Let's count the points now:

Miadon: 1

Finira: 6

Einnol: 2

Alfonso Knaf: 2

Nurahk: 1

Seytra: 3

Thank you all for participating. I'll come up with more questions for tomorrow. Maybe I'll give some tougher ones extra points.

\\o// And today's winner is: Finira! \\o// And today's winner: Finira! \\o// And today's winner: Finira! \\o//[/b]

Pardon, but I would like to add to some points.

There are more than two portals, as each race came through their own. It is unknown exactly where the other portals are, as some of the races made long journeys through the caves. No one came from the surface.

As to what material is immune to the Crystal's powers, you have missed an even more obvious answer. Air itself would have to be very resistant. However, this is all supposition by the scientists, as they have not been able to study the Crystal itself, or anything near it. It could just be that they are calling the world flat.

Who made the fact that Yliakum was an underground world built inside a stalactite common knowledge and how accepted is this theory?

I believe there was a specific name in one of the books in the library. Perhaps even the author of the book. Will have to check once someone gets the clients up and running.

There are more than two portals, as each race came through their own. It is unknown exactly where the other portals are, as some of the races made long journeys through the caves. No one came from the surface.
There are two distinct portals, plus one that may or may not be the same as the one outside Yliakum. It is certain that Diaboli, Dermorians and Klyros came through portals. It is not clear if all or some portals are connected to more than one source portal, allowing more than one race to come through any given portal. However, there is no hint to where Ylians, Enkidukai, Xacha, Nolthrir, Stonebreakers or Hamerwielders came from, except from outside Yliakum, therefore there may or may not be more than two portals.
The Stonebreakers, however, might have originated on the same planet as Yliakum:
Quote from: race description
The clan of Stonebreakers have lived for centuries digging tunnels, shafts, wells and caves in the deep of earth until they arrived to Yliakum.
All races appeared in Yliakum within more or less the same time period, and "centuries" may or may not extend beyond that (depending on what "a long time" is (Laanx studying the portal)).
Quote from: players guide
The reason of this coincidence is an earthquake that moved the surface of the earth creating new tunnels and caverns. After the initial fear these tunnels were explored by the inhabitants of the surface and some of them, covering a very great distance, were discovered to connect to the Stone Labyrinths that are connected to Yliakum
This seemingly contradicts
Quote from: settings
All other races are said to arrive from magical portals connected to other worlds.
However, given that the first sets forth a statement, whereas the second only declares a theory, it is possible to have both coexist: some races came from the surface, but everyone believes they came through portals.

Given their similarities, it is likely that both dwarven races came from the same place. Likewise, Ylians and Xacha may originally have come from the same place, though there they must have been separated for quite a while. If this is the case, then the Xacha seem to come from some region beyond the tropics.
Quote from: race description
Some old Xacha tell about a land where light was very dim and not always present
Also, the Nolthrir may have come from the same place as the Dermorians, with just a very different lifestyle, since the major alterations are attributed to the crystal.

OTOH, the clearly dissimilar races very likely originated at different places entirely, except possibly for humans / dwarves which might have the same overall origin.

Ynnwns are "native" to Yliakum in the way that they came into existance only after Diaboli mated with elves.
As to what material is immune to the Crystal's powers, you have missed an even more obvious answer. Air itself would have to be very resistant.
It is also possible that the air simply re-forms when it leaves the direct vincinity of the crystal, since the crystal just dissociates, not annihilates matter.

Erm....I forgot to mention that this info came from a discussion I had with Talad on the subject some time back. The 'Earthquake' is false, and was added by a re-writer without his knowledge. What address is that from, as  the corrected version is here: http://www.planeshift.it/setting_races.html

Anyway, if the update isn't fully ready tomorrow I might drop some more questions. I don't have access to any special source of information other than the main site and the forums so, all answers to my questions can be found or inferred from what's posted there there. Of crouse, some answers can be more open than others. Any clarification will be much appreciated and if this thread got you curious about Yliakum history and the game settings, then the main objective was fulfilled.

Looks like good entertainment sorry I missed it, some tough questions in there.  There is too many players that dont really research, or care to, the settings of planeshift.  Gotta give you your props Zhai, a good fun way to learn a bit even for those that have been around for a bit.   \\o//

That white text is almost completely unreadable on the forum skin I use.

As marked in my quote, that particular bit of information comes from the player's guide (on the main site). Specificly section 3.3 - races. I suspect that it's in the client's local PG copy as well. It may be a good idea to completely replace PG section 3 with a copy of the settings pages.

@white text: The readibility issues have been there for ages, so I've always used the/a brown theme.

@Zhai: good initiative, indeed. :)
On a related note, I chuckled when I saw "read our settings" instead of the usual "add comment here" in the announcement on the main site. That was overdue.
