Show me the way to Ojaveda
« on: December 26, 2006, 01:27:39 am »
There is a place through (what I call) the wastelands.  The mystical, mythical city called Ojaveda.  Seriously, how do you find it.

I was running around for what felt like an hour before I came upon a doorway into a hall.
So I entered the hall and exited the other end, only to find myself at what looked like the entrance.

I got so frustrated that I decided to /die and go back to Hydlaa.

So anybody got any idea's as I desperately want to offload some rat hides.

Respect in advance, Playa666

Also, before I even found the wastelands, i had to ask another person to direct me to the gate.
I find people will be more willing to help if you use some good, charming and polite RP.  I RP all the time and wish everyone would do the same!

Aside from that, great game so keep it coming!!

Giving an exact route to and from the cities wouldn't be allowed on the forums, as there is a strict no spoiler attitude here.  This reason is also why you will not find any real definate maps on the forums as well.  Things of this nature are best asked in game to a fellow traveller/explorer.  It seems you're quite fond of the RP idea, so I would assume that it shouldn't be too hard to find someone willing to take you there.

;D I eventually got there, phew.  Even though I died on the second wastelands map... ...twice... ...By falling from a great height.
I don't find it difficult to get there anymore.  Thanks for your comments.

the first time I got to the "cat city" was b/z someone agreed to accompany me there , it was a long way and he even gave me some money.
I never seen such helpful people , I don't think I would do it if I were him at this stage.
it's a very "warm" game with good people.
and if I want to kill a monster they usually let me
only 2 times I've seen a "bad" characters who stole my kills and spoke rude with me.

I've guided many a traveler between Ojaveda and Hydlaa.  I've done it so much I'm considering trading my helm for a tour guide hat.  :)

I once got lost looking for Ojaveda, and it took me forever before ending up in the Bronze Doors. (Since I'd never been there before I decided to talk to a handful of NPCs cause hey, why not.) Anyway...

I returned about two-thirds of the way to Hydlaa and found an enkidukai, asking her in the hopes she'd know where her hometown was. She agreed to help me, took me back the path I came, and subsequently also got lost because it was the Bronze Doors road and if you're there, I found out later, there is in fact no possible way to reach Ojaveda from that place unless you go back to Hydlaa. Said person eventually ignored me and attacked a tefusang, dying in about two hits (I'm assuming so she could return to Ojaveda, leaving me hanging out to dry.)

Asking someone for directions on a road is really tough because just about everyone runs and never stops to talk to someone trying to wave them down (if you're ever lucky enough to see someone on the road because roads are so sparsely populated and if you're in the wrong general area chances are anyone you come across is just as lost as you.)

It would appear that the only way to reach anywhere is to ask someone else while inside a city before you go, or indeed find an OOC map, "no spoiler" attitude or not. When people are committing suicide because they can't find the way back to Hydlaa, nobody's around to help them, and you forbid maps, that's a problem!

Are there helpful PCs? Yes. Are they always around when you need them? No. Saying that "things of this nature are best left to a fellow explorer" is a copout.

Up until and including version 0.3.014 of the PS Client, the Ojaveda Road set out from Hydlaa via the North Gates, passed through the Forest, and at the junction, a left turn sent you off in the direction of Ojaveda...

Then it all changed -big time

Version 0.3.015 saw the surface area of player explorable land expand to about 5 times the previous area, and Ojaveda leapfrog over Hydlaa entirely and the Ojaveda Road depart via the East Gates which had previously been closed.

A tip to exploring the wilderness areas for the first few times: walk and only run when you can clearly see the ground at your feet and ahead of you. Third Person Follow camera "M"ode is very useful here as you can also use the "Page Up" and "Page Down" keys to get a better idea of what sort of slope lies ahead of you.

New characters are vunerable to steep downwards terrain and can slide away or fall which is generally fatal. A useful technique for safely negotiating steep slopes is to use the strafe keys "Q" and "E" and to zig-zag at a gentle angle as if traversing a series of switchbacks in the trail. Third Person Follow camera "M"ode is also useful here as are the "Page Up" and "Page Down" keys.

As for maps, use pencil and paper, as you go, to take down notes of terrain features such as clumps of trees and groups of rocks etc

Take your time, look around... -looking back in the direction you just came from is very useful to do as well! :)

- running PlaneShift Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.11) Client, on an Apple iMac G5 2GHz PowerPC processor, 2GB DDR SDRAM, an ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card with 128MB VRAM, a 20-inch active-matrix LCD widescreen display, and a 250GB Serial ATA hard drive... so what's your excuse, huh?

Another helpful hint is to hotkey /unstick.  And when traversing unfamiliar territory, keep your finger on that key, in case you need to make a quick recovery.  It may not be very rp, but better than dying after falling 10 feet...on grass!

Small question, how can providing a basic map (medieval style, of course) of the relatively small world your character calls home be a spoiler? Come on, that is the most ridiculous thing I have heard in quite a while. It is bad enough the 'well traveled' roads are no more than scuffed dirt in the grass.

The way it should be: A sign "This way to Oja", followed by border stones the entire way.

Myself, I use the bumpmaps to find the general way.

It isn't, genius :] In fact we encourage people to make RP maps and share them on the forum:

The problem is that people take the easy route with screenshots, or put too much information down - like every pathway of the sewers - and so that we disallow

If on the other hand you're waiting for the dev team to provide the maps, there's no reason to rush us.

I know that, of course, and noticed that quote for the art forum years ago. It was Neko I was directing the statement at, who said it was against the no spoiler rules. If it was up to the Devs to make maps, then there would be no need of the mapmaking skill.

Now, what would be the policy towards an ascii art map in a character description such as "John holds up a map that looks like this: [ascii art map]" Or an ascii map that could be given in tells?

That's all he said :) We already have basic directions in the Gameplay FAQ, anyway.

ASCII maps are an interesting idea - while I dislike the use of the character description for anything but the description, I understand the current limitations. If you think you can make something legible, I don't see why not - it's in-game, anyway. Plus I doubt you'll be able to give much away.
