I believe this should change.
Ok.  However, it's unfair of you to expect people NOT to believe what seems obviously true.  Do you expect me every single time I see a character named "Nikodemus" to question whether or not it's an imposter?

@Venge:

Well, if this functionality is going to be designed and implemented, maybe it would be a good idea to make this feature also work in the event of character wipes.  This way it would also act as a sort of automatic name reservation system after a full wipe.
This is actually allready done via GM intervention on request.  When all the characters were deleted, a group of naughty players banded together to steal the names of well known players and guilds.  GMs intervened by deleting or renaming the imposters.  And like I said, GMs have intervened on my behalf a number of times.  If you try to make a character named Zanzibar, you will discover that name to be banned, even though "Africa" is still available.

Would you in real? Later i wrote about recognizing by face.
And the practice show "the obvious true" isn't so obviously true, hence the thread.

In real life, faces are unique.  In Planeshift, it's our first name which is supposed to be unique.  So yes, you can draw a parallel with real life... somewhat.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identity_theft

Quote
Punishments for the unlawful use of a "means of identification" were strengthened in s.1028a, allowing for a consecutive sentence under specific conditions of a felony violation defined in s. 1028c.

If used to commit another crime in the commission of identity theft in the United States (if charged federally) include:

    * Class B Felony: 6-20 years in Jail and a fine up to $10,000
    * Class C Felony: 2-8 years in Jail and a fine up to $10,000

Of course this is a suggestion for In-character identity theft and framing.

For making a character to impersonate others and spoil their OOC reputation with the community... according to the severeness of the action:

-1-2 weeks ban

-1 month ban

-2-8 months ban

-Permaban (If someone insists too much on the practice)

It's harsh, but this is an action that seeks clearly to use the game and it's resources as a mean to harm someone's reputation because of personal grief, and should be answered properly. We shouldn't play games with such things in mind(If you "hate" someone, invite him for a "duel" in a FPS, or "forgive and forget", these things always lead nowhere).

Luckily nobody will be able to make a character named "Annera Klorn", because I didn't delete her ;)

And this is not just using a character name, sometimes people actually create a character almost identical to the deleted one in behavior and talk(or tries to copycat it), this is not just using a name, it's clearly something with a bad OOC intention.

And you think what i'm wishing for here, in the wishlist? I thought i made it clear in my first posts. Now you probably think it is too much efford, but it is way out and i did describe under which conditions.

Raleigh. And what are you going to ban? "what", because it most likely won't be the person, unless he will be stupid enough to create the character on his main character account.

Will this person be persistent, bothersome and knowledgeable enough to go into Planeshift bouncing the conneciton through multiple proxy servers to hide his IP adress though?

And anyway, Nobody with a good mind would insist 24/7 on doing the same thing over and over again to bother other people after having 3 or more accounts banned due to it. But that is a risk, anyone could attempt to make a character very alike to one you recently created, and try to imitate the character description and behavior, but anyone who pays enough attention can notice the difference between the original and the fake. Unfortunately, not everybody does. We can do more to this than anyone else, if you see a character you know gone from someone who said was leaving Planeshift for sure, then suddenly created again, it would not be a bad idea to be suspicious about it.

There should be a zero tolerance policy for people stealing Planeshift identities.

Raleigh, You do realize, most people can change their IP on router reset and if they can't this means it is their ISP IP, not IP of he exact person? Banning the ISP IP you ban loads of other people too who did nothing wrong.

Instead, you ban the character name, and then you permanently ban the person's account while keeping a record of their IP address for future use.
