Character Creation Problem
« on: June 27, 2007, 04:57:38 am »
Hello, I just installed PlaneShift.  I can log in my account, but when i try to create a character, it freezes.  The graphics on the stone thing are sort of messed up too, and sometimes in blue letters it says "update" and a bunch of chinese symbols.  Can someone please help?

check to make sure your graphics card has most up to date drivers possible by going to the card manufacturer's website and downloading and installing them.

Avoid making one post right after another if no one has replied yet - just use the "Modify" button to add new information.

Reboot your computer, then update your drivers as the first thing you do, before you run anything else.

Ok, sorry.  I rebooted and installed new driver.  However, it still locks up at the character creation screen.  I also get a message that says: "Please run the updater" which is in blue and runs down the screen.

The updater message happens for everyone, but there are no updates available right now - so feel free to ignore the message.

Can you post your system specs for us? Processor, RAM amount, and video card model.

An integrated intel chipset isn't going to do you much good, unfortunately. Try typing dxdiag into the Windows Run command, look at the Display tab of the next window that pops up, and find the Approximate Total Memory. If it's below 64MB, your system is below the minimum requirements needed to run the game.

Thats probably becuase an integrated chipset shares its RAM with the main system RAM.  It could very well be that the chipset doesn't handle OpenGL (what the games uses) very well.

Yep, chances are that's shared system memory, so it's not all dedicated to graphics. An onboard chipset isn't going to have that high of an amount in MB. If updating the drivers didn't work, I'm afraid there isn't anything I can recommend. Invest in an actual separate video card - your games will love you for it ;)
