Grind
« on: September 01, 2007, 12:26:36 pm »
I am downloading the client now.  I will have extremely limited playtime, and do not plan to spend more than 4 hrs a week on this game due to alot going on in my actual life.  I have played MMORPGs for a long time and quit about 8 months ago.  I was wondering how big of a time sink this one might be.

This game can consume as few or as many hours as you wish. Depends what you want from it or how you play it.
It is very unlike other MMOs.
Proceeding through life like a cat without whiskers, perpetually stuck behind the refrigerator.

The thing is, you aren't reliant on others, so if your gone for awhile, or not on constantly, no one will care or even notice. If you don't get addicted, you may only spend a few hours on it a week, but thats what I figured when I started playing now I feel neglecting if I am not on for about 5 hours a day  :D.

This game tries to not put the emphasis on grinding and gaining levels (there isn't even a strict level system in place, only your skills determine your character)

So there is plenty to do without needing to spend hours and hours leveling.

Such extremely vague responses that try to dodge the actual question.

The answer is *Yes*, this game has a huge grind. The fact that it doesn't have classes and character levels is also its downside because instead of sticking to interesting roles with selective stats, many people try to max out *all* the stats. The stats themselves are basically another form of character levels.

Now, with the endurance being consumed faster than fuel by flames, and its incredibly slow recovery time, the grind is even worse because you'll either take incredibly long amount of time traveling even relatively short distances or you'll be grinding to gain the experience to put more points into it. Raising of skills is very expensive too. That alone makes the whole point of RP-like character creation go out of the window because you'll be experimenting with choices, which give as much endurance as possible, and most of them add "tank" archetype skills like "swords", "axes" or jobs that you don't need etc. Therefore, if you wanted to make a magic user character, who happened to run every morning and train his endurance, you won't be able to, since most magic related choices correspond to mental stats and magic related jobs.

Mining and crafting in this game is also a grind. And the only crafting you can do at this point is not suitable for magic user characters but if you're playing a "blacksmith" type of character, you might like it. Otherwise, you are stuck doing quests, most of which require a lot of travel and, hence, a lot of endurance, since your feet are the only form of transportation at this point.

Quests are an enormous grind in this game. You'll be wasting a lot of time deciphering through badly written dialog and guessing the exact phrase (or a limited number of phrases) to tell NPCs, even if you have the correct but differently worded replies from the start. Not to mention that many quests are bugged or become broken and are impossible to discard, unless you roll a new character. Non-discarded and uncompleted quests can in turn interfere with or break other quests.

Another grind comes in the form of dealing with constant server downtime, its instability, frequent disconnects, and overall lag.

Some will tell you that you don't need stats or anything else to RP. That is not true, unless your idea of RP is to stand in one place like a statue and chat all day. In that case, ask them if they'd be comfortable with removing all the stats from the game, and maybe all the graphics too. A lot of interesting RP involves travel and exploration, and maybe taking on a difficult mob too.

Alright.  This is starting to get sad.

The NPCs will in 95% of the cases tell you exactly what to say.  If you can read over what the NPC said and figure out that "Tell him I sent you" means to literally tell the person "<NPC> sent me" then it isn't really the quest systems problem is it?

I did about twenty quests in five days with the only problem being an actual bug.  Read what the NPC says and then use simple phrases.

Besides that.

-Classes would limit RP.

-I believe the devs have said the char creation will be changed.

-I don't know much about the endu, so I won't comment there.

-Grind coming from downtime O.o

-There will be more crafting in the future.

As said, the game is still in alpha, you've many good points but, you must realize that they will be fixed in time.  You didn't really point out anything the devs didn't know already.
