First go to windows explorer, navigate to your c: drive; click the folders tab 'create a new folder' call it 'planeshift'. 
reinstall the program : go through the instal procedure; when it says installing to c://program files/planeshift....... select 'change' or 'browse' choose a new location to instal to: c://planeshift, that will instal it outside of your program files folder.

During the installation at one point in the installer it will ask you where to install PS. By default it will be C:/Program Files/Planeshift Steel Blue. You can change this to any folder to wish, be it one on your Desktop or Home folder.

okay, so to begin with ive got windows XP.

Ive installed the game in c:/ps
then i opened the file updaterinfo.XML, copied to editpad, edited the"false" to "true".
Saved and overwrote it.

Now when i open it I get this: De XML-pagina kan niet worden weergegeven
Cannot read XML-input with make-up model . fix this error and press renew or try again later

Aso when running planshift updater i get this error:

yup thjat seems to work, but I still dont get why it didnt when i just changed it.

so I double post so people that could help wouldnt miss this:

I did it all, the PS updater did the up dates, yet when I click open launchr i still get the error: OpenAL32.dll is missing.
Also the updater sais:

Dl updatefile
md5sum of client zip doesnt matchcorrect md5sum!!
couldnt read file/this/updaterinfo.xml.bak!
failed to remove file/this/updaterinfo.xml.bak
update finished.

So what now?

rename updaterinfo.xml.bac to updaterinfo.xml and run the updater again.

just got back, didnt change anything yet but it seems to patch again.
