Windows Vista
« on: November 02, 2008, 01:07:50 am »
Is anyone else disappointed with this game-destroying lagmonster? I've had nothing but bad luck with it since I got it. At first I thought it was a dream come true, now I actually start playing a variety of games and each one lags so badly I just have to quit before I rip my hair out.

I'm forced to use Vista at the moment (used to use GNU/Linux ... don't ask) and I'm very disappointed too.
Performance is scary, all the "do you really want to..." dialogs kill me and development is a pain.
Most of that problems can most probably be solved by checking/unchecking some options here and there though ...

I've tried a lot of "miracle cures" for Vista's gaming performance, but none work. Those include unchecking programs that open at startup, reverting to Windows Classic Mode, disk cleanup + defrag, etc.

Go back to XP! Or even better, get a mac! If you really get goin, go penguin.

Of course game wise Mac and linux have a tiny library, so XP is your best bet really

Heh, even though Windows lags, I'd prefer having laggy games than not being able to play games at all, Macs. :P

Windows XP is much better for gaming, and that's why when I bought a new computer I didn't get the Vista.

You can go through task manager and end some unnecessary processes. In task manager you can also set the priority of the ps client to high. it helps a little.  Vista is a memory hog if you have any IM software running it will lag any game you are playing, be sure all IM software is not running.

In general Vista is a horrible product that should have never been released in its current state. If I could find the drivers I would go back to XP.

I'm amazed!

My aunt has Vista, and since I'm basically the computer know-it-all (even though I don't know it all) of the house, I know just how annoying it is. >___<;;

i use Xubunu (xfce branch of Ubuntu, much faster) for planeshift. I have a Windows partition mostly for Civilization IV & Warcraft III.
On linux if i have a terminal open i start PS with
Code: [Select]
$ planeshift , you have no idea how many times I have typed
Code: [Select]
$ planeshit :)

i actually love vista. it works to ways.

great for noobs to computers

great for veterans for computers.

i remember when xp came out oh everyone wanted to go back to 98 for so long.

vista is a great os imo. when i first got it was like F*ck vista and reverted back to XP. but soon learned all legit drivers are made for vista and not xp. xp ones are made by programmers that do work, but i found several problems with them. so i went back and actually played with vista.

first you gotta disable all eye candy, all unneccesary programs at startup AND U MUST have a minimum of 2gb of ram, anything less is stupid. oh and disable the firewall and other protection. they eat up ram.. all vista is, is a ram hog, figure out how to outsmart it and your in the clear like me.

besides the only ones that get virus' now adays are people who download porn and dont know how to pirate =)

anyways off to play left 4 dead!
There is no right or wrong.... only Trias.

You know, bash has this tab complete feature...
"Here's to lowering caskets of old friends choice and consequence we'll birth a new day with the death of an old and start over, start over.  Here's to burying hatchets in those who you'd never call your friend...we'll birth a new day with the death of an old day and start over, start over!"

I'm actually quite satisfied with my Vista rig.  But I've tweaked it and gotten rid of most the fluff for performance and stability increases.

I think I still like XP better, but had to get something that would support all the new hardware.
