Training Metallurgy...

I'm not very wise when it comes to met...  What is the best way to go about getting leveled up?  Do i just stay with iron stocks/ingots?  Or do i start to do Steel, Silver and gold when i can?  Just wondering, because i have no idea!

PS.  i dont think this is a violation of Board rules...is it?

Caarrie, I read this as asking what would be "best" to use for training... not a question of "how do I train" metallurgy. I wanted to respect the forum rules on spoilers, sorry if I made an incorrect assumption in either case.

Talad has a policy on the forums that if the "spoiler" will help a player from wasting their time and loosing materials it can be found on the forum this is why we have crafting guides, so going with this the info you have not said could be said to help people in the future.

To answer the original question then, if you are training mining at the same time start with tin as it is more valuable to sell as ingots then move to bronze or steel ingots. always train on ingots while they give experience as you will get more practice for smelting 10 ingots than one stock. Another thing to take note of is that ore weighs 10 times molten ore or ingots so you can smelt a full load of ore into ingots and then get more ore to smelt. In this way you can build up a considerable stockpile of ingots to keep you busy. Precious metals seem to give less practice as you only get it for casting but not melting.

I personally have found that Steel ingots give the best result. I have not seen where using stocks gives any more practice points, takes longer to melt, and you slag more material whenever you are not successful. Steel also has the benefit of giving practice both when you cast it and when you melt it down. Iron and platinum both only give you practice points for one or the other activity. I don't remember about silver/gold.

we are in agreement. Smelting one stock gives exactly as much practice as smelting one ingot, generally speaking. Another thing I should mention about alloys is that as soon as you hit the combine button you will want to separate the stack of ten into individual items. Also if you have enough ore to combine several times you should put the first batch in and combine it then remove all material from the furnace and proceed to the next batch to combine and continue in this manner as many times as possible. Once you have combined all your material you can then put each individual [coal|steel|tin|copper] sludge(?) into its own slot filling the furnace if it is not busy. In this way you can work on 16 at a time piling them into your inventory as they complete and keeping busy. At lower levels 10 or 20 units will suffice to gain a level and more will be required as you go along.
