RP advice for a time-constrained newbie
« on: March 09, 2009, 09:17:02 pm »
(OOC)
Greetings! Since I have not yet created a character (downloaded the game last night, but I can't log in at University) I can't write this in-character, but I'm not sure my questions could be asked IC anyway.

As you may have guessed by my previous statement, I'm a University student and thus very limited in my time availability. I stumbled upon this game and it reminded me of my first MMORPG (another completely free MMORPG based in Argentina) and I figured it would be nice to join a game where I can be part of the development process once again, even if my contribution is the proverbial grain of sand.

My questions have more to do with how to get as much RP done in as little game-time as I am likely to have (a few hours a week). I did try using the search command but I'm awful at those searches so I apologise if this is covered elsewhere. Anyway, here it goes:

1) Are there any places where RPers meet? I play another MMO where a particular tavern is THE focal point of RP in-game. You CAN find it elsewhere, but you are SURE to find it there. Any places like that?

2) Are there any ways to inform people that I am looking for RP? I know that this si a RP game, but people don't always have the time to stop and RP with a stranger... are there any conventions on how to let others know they can stop me at any time to RP with me?

And on a more particular note
3) Since I am completely new to the game and the lore, I am considering starting out with one of the worst RP archetypes, a character with amnesia. I plan on inventing him a back-story as I become more knowledgeable in the lore and have him remember some things and go looking for people or places that may trigger more memories (which should be a fun RP activity to share with others). However, a character like that needs someone to "mentor" him as he tries to become a part of main-stream society once again. Would anyone like to volunteer to lend this game (but not RP) newbie a hand? :)

most of this forum is ooc so you dont have to start your posts off saying it is ooc ;). you can often find people rping in places like the tavern, there is no set location to find people to rp. There is no "flag" used ingame to tell others you are looking for rp, a hint is to make sure your description is ic and kept to what your character looks like with no backstory. Once you get to know the game and those in it you will find people to rp with easier.

Welcome to PlaneShift.

You will find our community to be helpful and fun. I am sure even with a limited amount of time you will enjoy this game. Patience is most important, but once you get past the learning curve you will love it!!

You can start here. Also, check that board for current RP plots and events. :)

I agree with Caarrie...get a really good description and most likely the RPers will come to you. I can say from experience that if i read a desc that is just the default one, or that has the characters history in it, i will be less likely to talk with that person. If i see a really nice desc though for an interesting character ill try to find some way to "bump" into them (RPers are hard to find when im online so yes it may be a little OOC but it pays off in the long run).

Welcome to PlaneShift and good luck!!

Thank you (x3). I look forward to meeting y'all in-game. I'll post in the newbie thread once I know my character's name n' all those details!

actualy, you might want to check out this board, instead of the newbie board, for Rp threads: http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?board=43.0 (In game RP events)

and if you want to pre-read (or post read even) some very VERY basic stuff, you can check out the Bureau, in my signature below.  (note Serenyca's short post on "how to RP", as well as short posts about how to make tria (money) (you do not have to kill rats for days  :P )

You might also want to check the ps wiki out as well.  A lot more indepth.  If you decide to stick around, that will help you a lot.

Bureau is for "tourists" very new to Yliakum, Wiki more for those who really want to understand the game, but can be a bit overwhelming for those who first want to test the game out, and decide if they will like it enough to stick around a long time.

I do understand, it is hard to stay "IC" when you haven't learned the settings yet, and you will find some people favor certain aspects of the settings over others, and vice versa.  Of course you can register and go into ezpcusa server instead, to learn the settings some, but then you would have to start over on fragnetics if you really want to RP, especially since not many on ezpcserver yet (hard to find the registration page if you are new (check the bureau for a link to that as well, if ya want)).

either way, welcome.  \\o//

Farael,

My wife and I thinking of creating some new characters soon and joining the game.  Both of us prefer games with heavy RP-emphasis.  When we have characters in-game, we'll look you up.
