Needing advice as to how I may upgrade from 0.4 to 0.5 so I can get back on.

Hi I am a new player in Yliakum and I was playing in 2009 when about a month ago there was an upgrade from 0.4 to 0.5. I learned that I need to launch the Upgrade utility in my PlaneShift folder but found that I need to run it with 'administrator permissions' but I do not know how to do that. I have been busy in life and I havn't been able to spend much time looking in to this untill now. Any advice I can get will save me loads of time getting back to play and I really apreciate it.

I would not recommend the updater, because it takes much longer to download all files from the one and only updater server (or are there again a few?) than to download the whole new installer via BitTorrent (or possibly one of the HTTP mirrors).

It may be advisable to remove the previous version 0.4 for compatibility. Your game account will be kept, but you would possibly lose some customizations. But you can try just to overwrite the old version if you are not afraid of possible compatibility issues - I would just recommend to call the PlaneShift launcher once, set up all options, and close it: That should enforce updating the config files to a current state.

Very glad to get your advice LigH. I have some apprehension to try BitTorrent again though. Please understand that I Downloaded it last summer for the porpose of getting PlaneShift 0.4 and the BitTorrent application took over my whole lap top some how until the whole thing just froze up and quit. It was weird. I have not seen anything like it before or since. Every icon on my desk top turned to the BitTorrent symbol eventually. I had to call a tech at my school and get some help. I had to completely wipe my hard drive and start with only the basic operating system once again to get my computer back. You can see why I would be a bit leery of BitTorrent. I finally got PlaneShift 0.4 from thepiratebay.org. I have been hoping to find the new download for 0.5 there but no luck yet. May I ask you where to find one of the HTTP mirrors that you mentioned in your last post? I will look on the main site again for one.

You need to make sure you quit BitTorrent/uTorrent properly. It will still sit in the bottom corner of your screen seeding your torrent till you Exit it by right clicking the System Tray icon and hitting "Exit"

Strange report.

I don't see why you would search for the PlaneShift torrent file on ThePirateBay, it is officially downloadable from the PlaneShift download page.

And µTorrent never misbehaved for me (except that it is able to jam the network card if you enter too high connection values; but defaults are fine). It is quite a perfect application, so many features in such a tiny EXE (less than 1 MB).

But you may not really need a BitTorrent client, if you find at least one HTTP mirror which is fast for you.

Ah isn't ThePirateBay a bit torrent tracker so if you get anything form it you are actually using you know bit torrent? Would seem to be a logic error to say you are worried about bit torrent and they say you aren't worried about ThePirateBay

I am grateful for the responses from you all:
 When I read the words BitTorrent I automatically associated it with another website that is *not* uTorrent. There is a URL literally called http://www.bittorrent.com, as I recall, and it was from there that I downloaded the application that took over my laptop last summer. That is still a mystery to me. (Earowo do not be worried about bittorrent tech as I have had no trouble with thepiratebay or uTorrent and that is two out of three that did no harm)...
 That aside I did discover and download *uTorrent last night and I have no trouble with that. I used uTorrent to download the PlaneShift 0.5 app and I am still having trouble actually making it work. I am not sure why. Once again you all have my thanks and I hope to be back with PlaneShift as soon as possible. It will be a while yet as I have many more obligations and interests to attend to this year as opposed to last. PlaneShift is a novel creation.

I found that I can apply the torrent to my laptop by using the right click>open. Guess I was looking for a feature on the torrent GUI application itself. I am a noob. What can I say? It is loaded and I am about to try it. See you in game..

As far as I remember, µTorrent should have an option to assign *.torrent extensions to itself.

It can even download the *.torrent file itself if you copy and paste its URL from the website link.

It should be an implicitness to only download software from the original author (or generally trustworthy mirrors, if you know such).
