Please point me to How to Write a Book in game- thanks!
« on: February 13, 2010, 01:53:27 am »
I've made several searches through the forums and haven't found a step by step how to write in a book and make copies of that book in game. I've asked around ig but haven't found anyone who knows how. I'm windows vista if that makes any difference... can't seem to cut and paste from a .doc or a .txt file. Thanks for pointing me to the directions!

Open a book
Write something in it
Save it ( look for icons in the top left of the book )
Now, look for where the file was saved.

If you know where you logs are saved then in the directory that you logs directory is in.
There should be another directory named books.

You can put txt files in there and load them into a book.
( No .doc files.. Only plain txt files )

Ie.

Make a file called junk.txt
Put some text in it and save it.

Go into the game , open an empty book and click on the edit icon, then the load icon
Tell it to load.   Junk

If successful the contents of that file will be loaded int the book.
The filename will be the title.

Don't forget ti save your book when done editing.
You may need to move the saved book to a different inventory slot to see the name of the book update.

Good luck

Sorry to double post, but FYI I tried and tried to upload previously entered verbage through the logs, which took me forever to find, thanks again Rigwyn for your help on that. I could write a book ingame, save it, the change it ingame but I couldn't create a new book, even by saving a title and one word text as a starting point in the logs. Sure do wish there were an easier way to cut and paste into a book ig.... I guess RR, like the scribes of the medieval world, must copy each one by hand, separately, one by one...
UNLESS.
YOU are smarter than me!

actually you can, its just the long way around, you need to save the book, find the .xml file and edit the file, then load the book in game

Roled... I thought you would ask Erelenga first?! ;)

You will always need to buy empty books from Jayose. Only if you bought a book, you can fill it with previously saved content, making it a copy of another book.

And after you opened an empty book for writing, you can load a copy of a previously saved content into it ... if you remember exactly the title. So it might be advisable to create a copy of the text file with a much shorter filename which you can load easily.

Also you must give each single copy a unique title. And if it just has a running number added to the common title.

Apart from that ... a forum is not the most convenient way to work out how to do it and how to circumvent problems. Meeting in game (or via IRC) is much better. Unfortunately, you will have to tell me before the day and daytime when you will be available. I am not able to wait for you 24/7. ;)
