Safe & OpenGL not working
« on: May 24, 2003, 06:26:59 am »
Please Help

I have been able to create and I uploaded my character (I saw my character ?Elsabeth? listed on the Player Info page so I know that the server received it), however, when I tried to connect to the game in OpenGL mode I was unable to finish ?initializing world?.  The screen usually closes after several minutes of ?initializing world?.

I have also received messages like ?you are link dead?, ?you are already connected? and ?psclient.exe has encountered a problem?.

When I try to open in safe mode it says: ?Fatal Error crystalspace.video.software: 8bit palette mode no longer works in the software renderer.?

I have already run the updater.

I am running winXP and have already changed the properties in the psclient.exe file from 95 to 98/me.

OS: WinXp
Processor: 1200 Mhz Intel Celeron
RAM: 128MB (virtual memory 215)
Video Card: ? Intel 82815 Graphics Controller
Video Card Memory: 32mb
PS Client Version: 0.2.010 Mole. Blue
OpenGL or Safe Mode: both

Please let me know what I need to do or download to fix this problem.

Thanks, Drayton

This problem sounds like it could be multiple things

A Driver problem....
Which is a problem i doubt you have
But in that particular case make sure you are  using the newest driver set and using Direct 8 or higher.

Another possibility is that the Graphics card you are using is not working with the mode you are selecting.
This means either the graphics card has had part of its chip set burn out or else the graphics mode you set via the setup program is incorrect...i.e. there may have been a change in the game that has made the Graphics setting you chose incompatible for some reason.

The last possibility is...and I hate to say this....is corrupted data files.
In this case you can try the program on the main site to verify your files, which I am not to sure would help, or you can re-install the program, don\'t worry your character will not be lost.

The second possibility sounds the most plausible though.

I mostly run this game in GL mode with 32bit graphics and at 1024 by 768 resolution.
I believe some other people have pointed out that this mode selection seems to work the best....

If none of the above solutions work, I dont know what to tell you, except that you might have to get a Graphics card to run a field test with to verify if your Graphics Chip set is working properly.
I had a Graphics card develope a similar problem with its chips partialy burning out, it registered it was working, but refursed to do High resolution graphics.

I was having a very similar problem on my XP box with very similar specs

when connecting with OpenGL i would not be able to get anywhere...I would be so shoppy that I could not turn around

no matter what I set in the pssetup.exe file it would still use openGL.  So what I did was comment out the video renderer listing in the psclient.cfg file.

; Video Driver
;System.PlugIns.iGraphics3D = crystalspace.graphics3d.opengl

the next time I connected it was still choppy but I was at least able to move.  I am in Atlanta, Georgia and the pings to the server are close to the 400s so I am not expecting that much right now.

Try this and let me know if it helps.

Thank you for your suggestions, however I still can\'t get past \"Initializing World\" in Open GL and Safe Mode still doesn\'t work at all.  Open Gl just closes after about 4 - 5 minutes of loading.  Sometimes it says that my system has to increase the virtual memory.. it does... but it doesn\'t help.  I\'m going to buy and install some more SDRAM, maybe that will help.  I ran updates on all my drivers, WindowsXP and DirectX (now 9.0). I also reinstalled the program.

If you guys have any new suggestions please post.  I\'ll check back everyday.  Planeshift looks really cool, I wish I could get on.

Thanks,
Drayton

My advice, go get a cheap graphics card if you can, see if that helps. Or if possible borrow from another machine just to see if it will work.

As always perform the following (this is basically standard for all tech problems, PlaneShift is no different):

1. Update your video card drivers to the newest ones available (that is xp compatible)

2. Update your sound card drivers

3. Update to the newest version of DirectX (if already newest then reinstall it)

4. Make sure you have all virus checking programs and other tasks disabled or closed while running the game

--

I am unsure if any of those steps will help, the only thing I think that would is probably more ram or some driver/flash update for your motherboard.

You might want to try disabling sound on your coputer too...

Right Clik on My Computer go to \'Properties\'
Then click on the \"Hardware\" tab, and then \"Device Manager\"
Go to Sound, Video, and Game Controllers.
Locate your sound card and go to \"properties\". Then near the bottom select \"Do Not Use This Device (disable)\"

Good luck

Hail for you All!!!

Well, I\'ve tried everything, oh yes, everything...
    Even without soundcard...

Maybe my chipset???, or B.I.O.S. (bestial.idiot.operating. the system.)

Well I don\'t know, but I know just a thing:
    the problem is still workin

running on celeron 600 mhz, onboard SiS 630 32Mb (shared)
    256 Mb ram....
