How to Obtain a Console/Crash Log
« on: July 25, 2005, 02:57:14 pm »
This guide is intended for those asked to post a "Console log" or a "Crash log" as part of an effort to help them with bugs and crashes. It is intended for those running OS 10.3.x-10.5.x, though users of earlier and later versions of OS X should be able to follow it with minor changes.

Obtaining a console log:
1. Make sure Planeshift is not running. If it is, quit out of it.

2. In the Finder, navigate to your Applications folder ( /Applications/ ) and then to Utilities ( /Applications/Utilities/ ).

3.
a. Open the application Console(.app).
b. The open log (indicated by the window title) should be console.log. If it is, skip the rest of this step. Otherwise, continue below.
c. If you do not see a list of logs on the left of the open log, go to the View menu and select Show Log List; if you do, simply continue.
d. Then select from the log list what should be the top log, console.log.

4. Go up to the Edit menu and then down to "Clear Display" (you can also clear the log with the "Clear" button in the log window, if you have one).

5. Leave Console running and the log window open. Then, open Planeshift.

6. Do whatever you need to do in Planeshift to get the bug/crash to occur. Then exit (if it isn't a crash, that is) and switch back to Console.

7. Copy the contents of the log (Edit->Select all, Edit->Copy) and paste it (Edit->Paste) into a forum post or, if it is excessively long, into an email to whomever is trying to help you. If you email the log, make sure to give the message a clear title so that the person who is helping you knows not to delete it as junk. Only email the log if the person who is helping you has agreed to correspond via email.

Alternative way to get a Console Log
Assuming you installed PlaneShift in /Applications/PlaneShift, download this app use this app to run your psclient, it will open the terminal app and once you have a crash copy and paste the output to a forum post. If this app fails to work for you, seems to be an issue on some machines running 10.4 try this app
