Changes to Windows Installation Method + Newbie questions
« on: April 01, 2023, 06:18:13 am »
Hi Folks.

I'm new to Planeshift, so I want to verify that I'm on the right track with the following ideas before making changes on the wiki.

The docs suggest that the Windows Installation method involves downloading a windows installation file, which is traditionally an exe file, and that running that file installs the game, making the necessary changes to the Windows Registry to ensure the game appears in the lost of programs shown under the windows start menu. For example:

"Run the file after it fully downloads, and it will install the game."
https://www.hydlaaplaza.com/PlaneShift/smf/index.php?topic=21401.msg253390#msg253390

"Once downloaded, double click the downloaded icon and step through the installer.
Once the installation is complete, a new folder will appear in your Start Menu titled PlaneShift."

But when I downloaded the Windows versions, it's a zip file rather than an exe. When I unzipped it, there was no obvious installer program, so my guess is that the developers have made the decision to make Planeshift a portable app that doesn't touch the windows registry. (Good choice!) I have successfully logged in by treating it as a portable game and running the appropriate bat file. I just want to check that I haven't missed some way of installing it in the registry.

(I unzipped it with WinZip, but not all players will have that. I'll try drafting an explanation of how to unzip it that works for users who haven't installed any extra compression software to their Windows computer.)

"Locate the PlaneShift folder in the Start Menu and click on the pslaunch application (PlaneShift icon) or locate pslaunch.exe inside the installation directory (def: %ProgramFiles(x86)%\PlaneShift\pslaunch.exe)"

I don't see a pslaunch.exe. I've got a pslaunch.bat that runs PSLauncher.exe that seems to have the desired effect. Is that what I should be running?

"My map is too dark! I can't see where I'm going.
If adjusting the brightness/gamma settings of your monitor doesn't work, try running the game with the -fullbright command. It will eliminate lighting completely (and thus be warned: the game won't appear as pretty and you won't be able to tell night from day). Right-click on your PlaneShift shortcut, hit Properties, find the Target line and add a space and -fullbright at the very end."

The above was written in the context of the game being installed via a Windows installer. Is it supposed to work in the portable installation we now seem to have? I tried editing psclient.bat to add the -fullbright option to the end of the line that calls PSUnrealClient.exe, but it had no effect for me. Once in game, I figured out how to go into the Developer Options and activate "daylight override" there to make it permanent daylight, but that only lasts until I logout. It would be great if the -fullbright option fixed that permanently.

"Cannot connect:
Please check to make sure the server is running.  Goto the laanx (http://planeshift.teamix.org/) server page and check the stats on the left side.  If no one is on, or there is a large discrepancy in the time and report time (indicating a crash) the server is down."

"To see if the server is up go the main web page (http://planeshift.teamix.org/) of the server and check on the left columns the "Total Online" players connected; if this number is greater than 0 then the server is up."
https://www.planeshift.it/Quick-Start%20Guide

Is that "Total Online" number correct? Yesterday it was at 1 before I logged in and didn't change from that for the two hours or so I was connected. Today it was at zero, and hasn't changed since I logged in. Given the recent move to the Unreal Engine, I was wondering if perhaps that link hasn't been updated and is still pointing to the legacy server.
