Treasure Hunting
« on: July 05, 2003, 02:59:27 am »
Seeing as you can jump in the game, and their are stats for things like climbing, I\'m really, really, really hoping you can get items without killing stuff.  That is you could just explore and find things.  This requires a bit more thoughtful level design, but based on what things look like so far, it seems practical.  The problem lies in finding a fair way to implement it.  I think a modification of the current system used with Crystals would do well though.  If there we just a way you could pseudo randomize spawn points a bit, so people couldn\'t just camp out treasures... well that and once you find a treasure in a place you can never find it there again.  That would keep you from just telling other people where it is, and keep you from getting it again as well.  I haven\'t given to much thought to this at the moment, but that\'s what I want to hear from you all.  It\'s just that the last thing I want is a game dependent on killing for success.  I know it\'s a bit much to ask, but with a free game there\'s no hurt in taking a risk.

Just had to get that out there.

I think the idea you have is great... I also want to have alternative ways of getting items and xp than having to kill mobs... I mean, that\'s what you do in all the other mmorpgs, and quite frankly, it\'s boring.. I would like to see stuff like alchemy related quests, where you need to go get specifik alchemical ingredients in order to make the potion that someone requires... but that\'s just one of my small ideas...

yes that would be very very fun, instead of all u do is kill things you could go on mini quests for peoplem that would make the game very fun indeed!

Definitly a great idea.  :)

Maybe there could be treasure hunting areas, like undergound tombs/caves, and overland ruins and the such.

In these areas, special items would appear as Wedge describes.

You could make these places hard to find, and have obstacles like mobs in your way, which you need to kill just to get past them, not just to kill them to get items. That would mean only experienced players could get the rarer atifacts.

absolutely !! This is a must have ; a video game is not always about killing / receiving a reward and so on...

So I\'d just ad the thing with merchants, who could developp buy selling things, travellings between towns buy the cheapest there, go away and sell it elsewhere and so on ; but for that the economy setting has to be solid

Before using MOBs as guards though I still think the best way would be just to hide them in areas you can\'t reach without, say a high level climbing skill, maybe have  a jumping skill in there too.  And if there is fall damage in the game stuff like this would be plenty dangerous.  Coz\' I think if your gonna have a control setup like there is in the game now, it would be worth it to try and add a few platformeresque elements to the game, and use treasure hunting as a means of reward for being good at it.
