too much magic...???
« on: July 16, 2003, 08:59:03 pm »
I have herd the talk of 1000\'s of spells... I myself am not such a big fan of magic... used in every game...

But if you do use it, (I\'m quite sure u will) make it unique.

As in Dungeon Siege, there are 2 types of magic, and magic skill.
they had nature and combat

I suggest we do the same, but with out copying.

I suggest something like elemental and power...? dunno about the power 1..

What would make the game even more different and unique is if you didn\'t call it magic at all. i have no suggestion for what to call it, but people are always interested in what is different.

The plan is to have six seperate Ways of magic:-

Crystal,
Azure,
Dark,
Brown,
Red and
Blue.

I assume that all the different spells will be sorted into these categories. For example, taking the Azure Way as wind or air elemental magic, spells such as Levitation would be included in this Way. Red would be fire elemental and include the generic Fireball and Meteor type spells, Brown would be Earth including Earthquakes and Sandstorms, etc etc.

What you call \"Magic\" in PS is in fact Manipulation of the energies emitted by the Azure sun.

People in the world are just not able to fathom the power of this great crystal and aptly name those who harness its power \"Magicians\"

Put simply: people don\'t understand it...

but what would you call it then? the only other game in which I\'ve seen those effects called something else is Anarchy Online, where magic isn\'t \"magic\" but nano-technology, but that wouldn\'t fit into a medieval setting...

I vote for magic to be called magic still! And no change be made to it...

too much magic NEVER, lol j/k i understand your statement but magic should be magic, really this is a very unique arrangemnt, it almost seems random like illusion and lightning in the same shard and other strange things as such.

I really cannot think of anything else to call these anomalties of the azure sun?

Reakky its to early to know to much about magic since the devs haven\'t mentioned it yet but maybe they will soon  X(  ::nudges venge with puppy dog eyes::

As far as I know you would be able to use all kinds of magic, but the best combination would always consist of 2 ways... Dark & Red f.ex.

Oh, I\'ll use this opportunity to say \"farewell all\", and I\'ll be seing you again in about 2 weeks... going sailing ;)

bbye...

as long as the spell system doesnt suck ass like in everquest.

A - \"i\'d like a spell\"

B - \"mmkay, now whatcha gonna do, is run fur bout 5 hours that way, til you get to *stupid poorly designed city* where you\'ll buy a scroll from *damn near impossible to find guy* so\'s you can learned the spell\"

A - \"but you know the spell\"

B - \"yesir\"

A - \"cant you just teach it to me?\"

B - \"no\"

A - \"or write it down?\"

B - \"no\"

A - \"or cast it once, and I\'ll take notes?\"

B - \"no.  tis impossible.  I am limited by the half-assed design of the game\"

--------------------------

How it should work:  If you know people, you\'re in a guild, or you have the hook up, then you should be able to learn spells from other players.

your level of intelligence can be used to restrict what you can learn

lol

I would agree with that type of way, only if the spell was super rare. I mean we are going to have rare spells right?

NO!!!!!!!!! why why!!!!  Sometimes realism in a game is a little much... eating is realistic but so *%$-%##@ annoying!!!  If you want eating in there you will have to throw in sh*#ing also... and I don\'t think I\'ve heard anyone propose that yet! (don\'t even think about you kinky monkeys!!)

Abemore, while I acknowledge your point, death, pain and maiming are not valid deterrents in this game. And making it take a few years of study to cast a spell is counter productive to having fun.

But your proposal as valid as it seems on the surface, would mean that everyone who is a caster would have the same spell list.

But in the end as long as the teacher pays something in order to teach the spells, I have no problems, or that the pupil risks loosing skills or other known spells when learning new ones.

AC had a neat system where by the more people who knew the spell the less powerful it was, this was mostly on the big name spells. The result was that on raids or any large high level combat the casters where nothing more then hit point batteries, as any of the melee types would always do more damage then the top casters.

So, while I agree in the get scroll/learn spell is pretty stupid, our first incarnation of the magic system will have something very mush like that, later we will probably migrate to something more effective, but the balance of cause and effect have to be maintained.

so your saying you want every 1 to have an equal oppertunity to learn the same spells?

you should have to do somthing to learn high spells. Perhaps the schools are for begining the type of magic, teach you the basics before you can move on to geting other spells.
