Official Thieves Den
« on: July 21, 2003, 02:16:45 am »
Since this includes quests and *coughs loudly* the PvP forum *still coughing* is dead *fits of coughing abruptly stop* I think it is appropriate to post this here just so that the basic idea can better be argued over.  It is a little long, but I hope people will read it in it\'s entirety.

There should be a HIDDEN thieves guild somewhere in the lower levels that holds the exclusive rights to pickpocketing - in that way thiefs must go through the trial of A: finding the guild B: getting through the high level monsters to it C: Succesfully finding the acceptance Quest D: trials of acceptance E: finally becoming a thief

This is the important part:::::::::: The Thieves\' guild members consult with an NPC which rolls a random name of either another NPC (who is not in the Thieves Guild) or player character currently in the game. The thief then has to find said character and succesfuly pickpocket them without being seen (by a spot check) - The thief doesn\'t actually take anything from the player; on a succesful steal the thief completes the quest and goes back to their guild to recieve an xp and monetary/treasure reward.

Of course such a guild would be vulnerable to attack from other guilds since afterall - who doesn\'t want to destroy a thieves guild? Just an idea but - to further refine the pickpocketing quest - temporary PvP could be added until it\'s completion or either player logs out, with the permission of both parties - this would entice the thief to be doubly careful in sneaking up to and away from his target like a real thief.

For those crazy PvP junkies out there: an assasin guild could be programed out of the same Random character selection quest with the addition of permission from the target and that no important NPCs can be targeted.

if you have only for theives, then you have to have for everyone else the kind of hideout you described.
and that would remind everyone of Eq really fast.

no you wouldnt!!!  the reason this has to be done for thieves is because of the balancing of the pickpocket skill!!!  Alot of people dont want pick pocketing (devs included) this is just another suggestion to get around it!!  There is no reason players cant make their own fighters and mages guilds... thieves NEED something to allow them to be a thief... to steal... that is why I offered this post

in eq, i remember, being a theif was not rewarding, well it really sucked, i thevery should be allowed though in planeshift, but not on npcs, but on players themselves.
but there should be a catch.
first of all if a theif is about to rob somebody it will take the time for him to penetrate persons pockets, once he\'s in though, he should be able to take anything, but only a single object.  during this time however a player can easily run away if he sees that he\'s being robbed.

2nd catch

the skill of theivery should be from 1-10. 1 being the slowest and worst level.  Lets say you are a theif on level one, and you come up to a player, and start pickpocketing.  there\'s a 10% chance that you will even penetrate his pockets, but then there\'s also a 30 second wait lets say.  During that time a player will see that you are up to no good and can notify the authorities (:) whoever that will be) or run away.
the more successful steals a theif has, the more he levels up, increasing the chance of stealing and the speed of theft.

3rd catch

if a theif is successful in theivery even once, there should be a very dim neon letter \"T\" above his head when he walks, so that if the ps has any police npcs or if there\'s gonna be pvp, depending on how good you can see the \"T\" you can take action.
The more the theif steals, the longer and brighter the \"T\" becomes.

Maybe this is stupid but it\'s the way I think would be ok as long not everyone will run to learn the theif skill because of being jelous of items people have :).

the problem is - the devs dont want PvP pickpocketing... this is just a suggestion to keep some form of pickpovketing vs. players in the game - the only way it seems is to make it more of a game - the system I proposed above has nothing to do with and CANNOT BE USED FOR GRIEF.  That is why it is better than your suggestion.

oh I didn\'t read the glowing \'T\' idea... ROFL that is ridiculous!!! There is no reason to hurt a class when they are succesful at something!!!  How do you plan on roleplaying seeing a \'T\' over someone\'s head?????

\"Oh yeah mr thief I *ermm* had a succesful spot check against your hide in shadows skill *ermm * when did you last steal (cmon man I want to pk you - which we arnt even gonnna have in this game - EVER)\"

yeah... maybe the T idea sucks ass, so what.

But I also think your idea is retarted because you would have to be a high level rogue(or whatever) who has to battle his way thru just to learn some basic theivery.

theivs usually start out from the beginning, it\'s not a privilage, it\'s a necessety.

I dont want thiefs in PS. There, I said it. The reason is simple, I dont see a way to do PvP/pickpocketing without griefers.
BUT, if stealing is ever implented, it should be very realistic. After all, taking a huge crossbow from someone without them noticing it? Limit it to coins, and smaller objects.
Browsing the forums when I\'m bored, nothing more.

there are different ways of theiving.

snuffing a player and taking his EVERYTHING is possible. or just pickpocketing to take some change.

i like the idea of just a thieves hideout or guild .... whatever

and mostly the thieves would get killed by pvp and hopefully they can only steal spare change from other players.

How about some kind of K.O system where a succesful \"roll\" for the victim, and a failure for the thief means that the victim KOs him so that he can call for the local guards or something.
That way there will be no PvP, easy as that  :P

BTW. If everybody was roleplaying we wouldn\'t have problems like this...

Thieves steal things because they have no other way of supporting themselves and their basic needs. Thieves will steal gold simply to stay alive, have enough food to eat, clothes, etc.

A thief isn\'t going to go try steal from the randomly selected NPC/Player if they don\'t get to actually take any items from them. How can you call it a successful steal if you walk away empty handed?

Do you really think that the victim is going to agree to letting a thief attempt to steal from him? Wouldn\'t this make the actual thievery act virtually impossible if the target is aware that \'Shesaile Shol Saardh?\' ;)

They may have the rights, but being a thief means disobeying the rules. Allowing this would mean allowing the illegal non-agressive PvP form: thievery for all players. And this is something the Gods do not want.

I know the devs will not have stealing - thats why the idea was thrown out - but I don\'t see why you people think that this system throws open the backdoor for ALL pickpockets - it would replace such activites... it\'s better than the current way the devs are going with no pickpoceting... and none of your steal from people ides will ever be accepted :P
