is it really hard to believe it will stay free? i mean if they suddenly started making progress and releasing updates in 2 months, THEN and only then would I be worried. Cus they are gonna need something to pay for whatever is getting em updates in 2 months...

Well it would be hard to keep people paying, considering it\'s open source...

As long as art/settings is copyrighted and you can\'t play without art/settings, i don\'t see why it\'d be hard.

Of course, we all trust the devs :)

Indeed, the only really viable way to either go donationware or charge for distribution, which isn\'t half bad anyway; I\'m sure us 56k\'ers wouldn\'t mind paying $5-$10 for a Planeshift CD instead of downloading CB.  Of course, they don\'t need to do this, since they\'re not looking for a profit anyway; they don\'t really need one, either, they\'ve came this far gratis.  But who wouldn\'t like to give them something for their trouble.

Yes, you do have a point there...  Someone could make a knock-off, though; call it PlainSift.  I\'m a Ylain mage accompiened by a Kron Warrior and a Enkidenki Priest of Salad.

A license like for Tetris would help. Dunno much about the planeshift license, but youll have to pay if you make a comercial game like Tetris with the name Totris.

The aim of this license is not to prevent commercial use. It is to prevent forks (splitting of the dev team in two part), that can screw a project of this size. Hiding settings is also a good idea because releasing quests can make the game really more easy. :P The third reason is because they don\'t want to see games that use Planeshift art because it\'ll remove the uniqueness of it.

That\'s not licensing, its in order to prevent confusion in the marketplace.  Basically, if you write a Tetris-like game with a *tris name, then you\'re creating confusion and can be sued, they actually have legal precident here.  Tetris is a fairly nonsense word, so that *tris confusion is understandable.

really it wouldnt be that hard to translate an open source game to some sure fire way of payment, but whatever. its cool the game is free but planeshift should defenally release cd\' s for money that have the full game, as long as they have a free downloading version too. that way they could make some money to help the game progress while at the same time keeping the game free. cmon lets let the devs live a little.. hehe :P

The Tetris comapny (dont remember the exactly) patented the name. So, its something like a license.
